The car originally was equipped with a standard rear axle (ratio 2.14:1). With the Goodyear Invicta GL's that were on the car before I put the Firehawks on it, the unloaded tire would spin quite easily. I barely got the car dug out of a snowbank in early Jan. and decided to stop messing around and go ahead and replace the gears. I called Templeton Oldsmobile in nearby Tysons Corner, VA and asked how much it would run me to get limited slip gearing. With GM parts and labor costs, it was around 1000 bucks. So I decided to call around to local salvage yards. I found a perfect replacement: a 2.29:1 axle supposedly from a 1984 Pontiac Grand Prix. The salesman said it was a posi-traction axle, so I drove over to take a look. The was as much rust on this axle as there was on mine, but nothing was corroded, so I handed over the $200. Dranesville Auto in Great Falls, VA. handled the installation procedures for $150.
