My Heart

"Give me your heart," you said.
Not wanting to part with it,
I held back-it was so fragile.
I wanted to run, but I held it out instead.

I stood by and watched you
As you examined it for an opening.
The wall I had built was thick,
But you removed the bricks and found a way through.

I thought you'd give up
When you found out there was more.
Ignoring my pleas, you kept on.
Tears...running down my face
I begged you to stop.

Carefully you tore off the layers-
Hurt, pain, shame, broken dreams
You went through them without a word.
I was sure by then you would be disgusted at what you saw.

Finally you got to the core-
The center of me.
Everything I believed in
The stars I wished on.
All of it locked behind a door.

Not knowing what else to do
I handed you the key and waited--
And when you opened the door,
Much to my surprise,
All I saw...was you.
