| Many of the ESL students that come to Maple Ridge are from Asians countries. The education system in these countries is very different from the education system in Canada. This page is for ESL parents and students to help them with understanding some of the important aspects of education in Canada. These are general statements and many vary from school to school. | ||||||||||||
| -teachers do not use physical force -no school on Saturdays -teachers are not as strict as in many Asian countries -parents generally do not ask teachers about their training and salary -the goal of education is to produce individuals who are intellectually, socially, physically, esthetically and artistically developed and socially responsible -students are taught skills to learn -students are encouraged and expected to ask questions -students learn through exploration and their own inquiry -students are taught how to problem- solve and apply information -internal motivation and self- discipline is encouraged -students are taught to enjoy life-long learning -students are not ranked by the teacher -group work is a major part of the school day -competition exists but effort is more important than the final mark -reading fiction is taught and encouraged -reading is a means to discovery of information |
