-provide a tour of the school
-set the student up with a buddy
-discuss fire drills, fire alarms and bells as this can be very frightening when heard for the first time
-use visuals in your teaching as much as possible
-expect that the students will feel overwhelmed and go through many stages of cultural shock
-for the first few weeks let the student observe and don't feel like they should be doing something
-if there is an ESL teacher involved, ask for materials/resources to help the student learn English as fast as possible.
