Nara |
Just a short trip from Kyoto is Nara, another of the historical and cultural hubs of Japan. Worth a visit if only for the splendour of the statue of the great buddha and its famous five storey pagoda. Oh, and all the deer too, of course! |

In front of the Daibutsuden - the Hall of the Great Buddha - at Todai Temple. Only two thirds its original size (it was destroyed by fire and rebuilt in 1709), it`s still the largest wooden building in the world! |

"The Symbol of Nara" - The five storied pagoda at Kofuku Temple. |

Inside the Daibutsuden is this pillar. At the bottom of it there is a hole carved through the middle. If you can squeeze through this hole you are supposed to attain enlightenment! Good luck on that as the hole is not a foreigner friendly size! |

And here is the Great Buddha of Nara himself! This is the world`s largest bronze image of buddha! |

Outside of the Daibutsuden is this wooden statue. If you are in pain, you should touch the statue in the corresponding place to where your pain is, and it is supposed to take the pain away. Still not sure why it`s wearing a rain coat though! |

Who could leave Nara without spending some time with their ever so cute and over friendly deer! Be warned: they are so used to being fed by the visiting tourists that they expect something from you even when you have nothing to give them! |
