From the Trail 7/31/01-8/17/01:
7/31/01 - Riga Lean To - 11.0 miles.  Took awhile to get going this morning, but once we did the hiking was pretty good.  We went into Salisburg, CT for lunch & then headed up Lions Head.  We packed a bunch of fresh veggies & are cooking a stew for dinner.
8/1/01 - Stealth Campsite - 13.7 miles.  Had a great hiking day with lots of views.  We went over the highest point in CT - Bear Mt.   Then we went through Sages Ravine, a gorgeous area w/ a brook & lots of small waterfalls.  Crossed into Massachusetts.
8/2/01 - East Mt. Retreat Center - 11.9 miles.  We went into Great Barrington today to get Moons boots fixed.  Had a great breakfast & lunch while in town also.  Finally met up w/ our friend Featherweight & Litefoot.  They are adopting our hiking style now that they've caught up!
8/3/01 - Upper Goose Pond Campsite - 19.1 miles.  We hiked a big mile day today so people at home would stop giving us a hard time :)  Really, we wanted to get to this pond because we heard it was beautiful (and there is a caretaker who cooks a breakfast).  Very hot today & then storms moved in this afternoon.   It is raining still (we needed it).
8/4/01 - Upper Goose Pond Campsite - 0 miles.  It rained most of the morning & we decided to hang out w/ our friends at the cabin that is here.  Had a fun time playing cards & relaxing.  It looks like the rain has stopped & we are heading out early tomorrow.
8/5/01 - Dalton, Mass - 20.6 miles.  Big day today but not too hard.   Spent lunch picking blueberries at a U-Pick farm.  Hiked all day with Litefoot & Featherweight and walked into town to enjoy a meal & wine.  Hot & Humid today but at least the terrain was nice.
8/6/01 - Mt. Greylock Campsite - 11.1 miles.  Another hot, hot day.   We hiked in the morning/early afternoon, took a long break & ate an early dinner, then continued hiking in the evening.  This worked out well since we didn't hike in the hottest part of the day.
8/7/01 - Sherman Brook Campsite - 14.0 miles.  Climbed Greylock Mt., the hightest point in Mass.  The wind was really blowing up there & felt great.   It got hot out again today, and 100 weather is forecast for the next 2 days - YUK!
8/8/01 - Audrey & Anna's Home, Arlington, VT - 16.6 miles.   Another scorcher today - record highs!  It makes for very hot & sweaty hiking.  Our friends Litefoot & Featherweight have an Aunt that lives in the area & they were kind enough to invite us to stay at their home.  It is very appreciated to escape the heat tomorrow (105 forecast)
8/9/01 - Arlington, VT - 0 miles.  We are spending the day with Litefoot & Featherweight, Audry, & Anna.  We are planning a huge dinner feast & basically lazing around for the day.
8/10/01 - Goddard Shelter Campsite - 10.1 miles.  We got hit with a powerful thunderstorm last night & some rain this morning.  It had stopped by the time we got going (LATE), though.  It is somewhat clear now & much cooler, thankfully.
8/11/01 - Stratton Mt. Ski Patrol Hut - 16.3 miles.  Today was gorgeous - not as hot & nice clear views.  We are on the top of Stratton Mt.   There is a ski resort here that lets thru-hikers use a ski patrol hut as a shelter during the summer.
8/12/01 - Manchester Center, VT - 13.7 miles.  We had a beautiful sunset last night on Stratton Mt.  Today was overcast but it never really rained - great day to hike.  Vermont is a pretty state to hike in - lots of pine trees, moss covered rocks, shamrocks, etc.  We came into town to eat & resupply.
8/13/01 - Lost Pond Shelter - 14.3 miles.  Had a terrific breakfast in Manchester - We wanted to take a day off so we could go there again!  Alas, the trail calls.  A nice guy for New Jersey gave us a ride to the trail.  Had a nice view from Bromley Mt.  Vermont is treating us well!
8/14/01 - Minerva Hinchey Shelter - 14.8 miles.  Had a gorgeous day today.  We passed lots of brooks & little rock pond.  Had a fun time hiking with Zombie & Blizzard, 2 section hikers who also hiked the AT for their honeymoon. (8yrs ago)
8/15/01 - Killington Peak Campsite - 13.9 miles.  We are camped .2 miles from the top of Killington Mt.  We hiked up to the top to watch the sunset, then came back to our campsite & watched the stars come out.  We even saw a little bit of the meteor showers.  They peak from 12-4 a.m. so we are going to miss the peak.
8/16/01 - VISIT - Aunt Blanche's Home - 6.3 miles.  We hiked down Killington to the Inn at Long Trail.  Moon's Mom & Aunt met us there & drove us to Ticonderoga, NY where we are taking a day off to relax & visit.
8/17/01 - Aunt Blanche's Home - 0 miles.  In honor of our 5 month wedding anniversary, we did not hike today :)  We are have a great day visiting with friends & family in Ticonderoga!
