From the Trail 6/02/01 - 6/10/01 + 6/23/01 - 6/29/01:
6/2/01 - Econolodge, Daleville, VA - 0 miles.  We were abducted by aliens & never got out of town today.  As long as they don't return we are heading out 1st thing tomorrow & will do today & tomorrow's mileage in 1 day (we were only planning on doing 5 miles today)  START OF LOST ENTRIES
6/3/01 - Bobblets Gap Shelter - 18.5 miles.  Today was beautiful.   We headed out of town with very heavy packs since we won't be resupplying until Waynesboro.  The hiking was nice, though and the trail is now roughly paralleling the Blue Ridge Parkway.
6/4/01 - Floyd Mountain Campsite - 15.6 miles.  The day started out cool & cloudy, but the sun eventually came out & really warmed things up.  We were doing great until we hit Floyd Mountain.  It is tough to climb at the end of the day!  We made it 1/2 way up to this campsite.  We will tackle the rest tomorrow & after a good nights sleep it won't seem as bad.
6/5/01 - Marble Spring Campsite - 14.9 miles.  Today was very hot & sunny, then the boomers came in.  Luckily we got the tent set up right before the rain started coming down.  It let up a little & we were able to cook our dinner.  We saw a buck in our campsite that still had the velvet on his antlers.   He wasn't scared of us & was only about 10 feet away.  The other highlight of our day was climbing Highcock Knob (yes, that is the actual name).
6/6/01 - Punchbowl Shelter Campsite - 18.1 miles.  Today dawned hot & sunny again.  We got showers in the afternoon, but it has cleared up & cooled down a bit.  We are camped right near a pond with bull frogs & peepers chirping away.  During our hike today we saw lots of damage from gypsy moth catepillars.  They eat everything - including rhododendrens, huckleberries, oak trees, etc.
6/7/01 - Hog Camp Gap Campsite - 16.9 miles.  We went over a bald today, something we haven't done awhile.  We have more coming up, too!  Today is the first day in a while without rain.  Our stuff would be dry if we weren't sweating so much.
6/8/01 - Tye River Campsite - 19.4 miles.  Today was a beautifuly day - a little coolers & clear skys.  We climbed Spy Rock, where confederate soldiers spied on union soldiers during the Civil War.  We also climbed The Priest, which isn't bad heading north.  It was a steep downhill for us.
6/9/01 - VISIT - Big Meadows Lodge - 0 miles.  Our friends BarbNAl, Joe & Leilani, & Dana & Patrick came all the way from South Jersey to see us.  They brought all kinds of goodies to eat (Marinated Veggies, real Italian bread, Linguini Salad, Brownies, etc...)  We went to Luray Caverns and toured the underground caverns - they were really neat.  Then we did something different - went on a hike!  It was great to see friends from home - Love you guys!
6/10/01 - Dripping Rocks Campsite - 15.3 miles.   Our friends dropped us off back at Tye River this morning & it was back to "work".  The day was gorgeous.  We climbed Three Bridges & had great views.  The trail was rocky & we are beat.  END OF LOST ENTRIES
6/23/01 - Ed Garvey Campsite - 7.0 miles.  We did the rest of our town chores this morning & toured around Historic Harpers Ferry.   The Appalachian Trail Conf. (ATC) has their headquarters here, and we checked in.   We are thru-hikers # 389 & 390.  After lunch we hiked to this campsite.   We are now in Maryland.
6/24/01 - VISIT - Pogo Campsite - 19.9 miles.  Hiked through 2 state parks today.   Saw the original Washington Monument - an Obelisk stone structure.  The weather was wonderful - cool & sunny.  Between the nice weather & kind terrain the hiking was easy.  Met my Mom and cousin at this campsite & they will be hiking with us tomorrow.
6/25/01 - Devils Race Course Shelter - 9.3 miles.   Hiked w/ my Mom & cousin Vicki today.  Went slow & enjoyed the sights.   My Mom had lunch waiting in the car & we picniced.  It was great to have a "normal" lunch!
6/26/01 - Stealth Campsite - 16.9 miles.  Days are heating up again.  We passed another milestone today - The Mason-Dixon line.   We are now in Pennsylvania - so close to our home state!  Said bye to Mom & Vicki this morning.
6/27/01 - Stealth Campsite - 16.5 miles.   Another very hot day.  We went through Caledonia State Park, where we were able to get snacks at a concessions stand.  Moon is preparing for the 1/2 gallon challenge tomorrow, when we reach the 1/2 way point of the AT.  He will attempt to eat a 1/2 gallon of ice cream.  We are meeting our hiking friends Hipbone & Mt. Goat, and facing the challenge together!
6/28/01 - VISIT - Stallsmith Home - 17.1 miles.  Moon did it!  He at 1/2 gallon of Mint Chocolate Chip ice cream to celebrate our 1/2 way point.  He did this feat in 94 min 13 sec - pretty good time.  We then took a long break by the lake at Pine Grove Furnace State Park.  Moon's Dad has friends near the trail & they picked us up, treated us to dinner, and gave us a room for the night - so nice to be away from the bugs & heat!
6/29/01 - Boiling Springs, PA - 11.7 miles.   The heat is getting worse every day!  The climbs we had today were very tough due to the heat.  We also had some rock climbing - it was a nice change but brutal.   Before we hit town the trail follows farms for about 2 miles - NO shade.  We are now hanging out in town waiting for Moon's Dad, who is coming to pick us up & take us to his campground to visit for a day.
