A brief History of Summer Music Day Camp

Summer Music Day Camp had its official start in the Summer of 1997 and grew out of the Day Camps that had been a yearly tradition at Campbell Baptist Church in Windsor since the 1970's. For years, campers came from across Windsor and Essex County from a variety of churches and different backgrounds to enjoy a week of Bible Study, Games, Afternoon field trips and music. Camp Director David Weaver (since 1994) saw the need to refine the focus of the camp as a ministry training opportunity for Youth in addition to being a week of fun activities. A noted South Western Ontario conductor and music educator, Mr. Weaver gathered together some of the finest musicians and teachers in the area with a passion for church music and youth ministry and started the first edition of Summer Music Day Camp in 1997. The vision for the camp was to introduce children and youth to inspiring music from our Judeo-Christian heritage - Psalms and Hymns and Spiritual Songs from our past as well as the best contemporary worship music from the present.

During each camp week, campers learn approximately 18 exciting choral selections - everything from Gregorian Chant, to Bach, to the latest Gospel and Modern Worship Music. Campers learn the fundamentals of good vocal technique and musicianship. Also they learn the importance of serving the Lord with their gifts and talents. The goal is to provide a stimulating week for campers to refine their skills and most importantly to improve their walk with the Lord. Then, after the week, we encourage each camper to return to their home churches and share the skills they have learned with their own worship community, whether it be in a children's or youth choir, a worship team, or musical ensemble at school or in the community.

Over the past 10 years, we have commissioned Brian Usher of Alpha Music Studios to create fresh and new orchestrations for traditional Sunday School songs and Hymns and we have been delighted to present these classics to a new generation of singers. Each year we gather fine musicians from Windsor, Detroit and London to create our Summer Music Day Camp Orchestra to accompany our Camp Choir. This is a special opportunity for the youth to perform, many for the first time with an orchestra. The results of the week are truly amazing with usually over 100 musicians joining forces to present an exciting final concert on the last Saturday night of camp for parents and friends to attend.

In 2001, change was in the air and the Lord brought us to move this Youth Church Music Camp to the wonderful facilities at All Saints' Church in beautiful City Hall Square in Downtown Windsor. The church staff have been most supportive and helpful in this minisrty. Every year the camp has grown and more and more youth from across the region come each summer for a fun week of music, friends and spiritual growth. The Summer Music Day Camp Family includes so many wonderful volunteers and helpers. . Also, each year dozens of generous donors and community partners contribute financially to help keep the camp tuition fees at an affordable level. Over the past 4 years we have been using Canterbury College at the University of Windsor to house some of our counselling staff and guest artists.

It is hard to believe 10 years have gone by so fast! We are planning a very special camp this summer that will feature the best music from the past 10 years plus some exciting new music that will become instant favourites.

We are looking for Young people Ages 9 to 19 to join us this summer for a great musical experience and for staff and alumni to assist with leadership for this year's camp week. Come joins us to "Sing and Celebrate"!!

Please visit our web-site for more information and for Registration Forms. The Summer Music Day Camp Office is Open daily from 9am until 1pm - phone 519-253-8001. Ask for Joan!

We hope you will join us for our 12th Anniversary Celebration Camp Week August 23 to 29, 2009!! Don't miss it!!!
