| This
series started in 1985 when Michael asked me to paint the James Dean and
Edie Sedgewick you see here. After that people started giving me ideas
and asking me to do paintings of specific people.
The series started out as strictly black and white then I started adding color and experimenting with the images. I tried out different techniques and styles on the backgrounds as I worked. I displayed them at the Grand Opening of Blush Modeling and Talent agency and anywhere else I could find to show them. Some of them sold and I got a few commissions, but they never really took off. It was something to do and I was experimenting with totally different techniques and other media as well. I did the fun art on my own time while I worked as a graphic artist to support myself. I graduated from Eastern New Mexico University with a Bachelor of Fine Art, in 1984, and moved to Albuquerque, New Mexico in November of that year. I had aspirations of becoming a famous artist one day and I knew it wasn't going to happen if I stayed in Portales. I got a job offer six months after I graduated college and jumped at the chance to get out of the small town I grew up in. At the time I accepted the offer, I was working as the Art Intern at KENW-TV. I took a job as Draftsman/Illustrator at Dynalectron in Albuquerque. After I started working for a government contractor I found out how dry the subject matter was. I had to do something to let out my creativity so I started painting. I did the commercial work for a living and painted and drew what I wanted during my free time. It kept me occupied and I enjoyed doing the work as I searched for a style. The work evolved over time and I got better with each painting. I was doing a painting of Georgia O'keefe when I got my video camera. That took me in a whole new direction and I didn't paint nearly as much as I had before I got the video camera. After that I started branching into creating things on video tape and using the art I had created as subject matter. |
