EDUL 6020 Module 2 Group Activity

Plan for involving teachers in Tyler’s process for selecting educational purposes

Question 1 of Tyler’s process for developing curriculum and a plan for instruction is:

What educational purposes should the school seek to attain?

1.      The faculty would be presented with a brief explanation of the need for determining the educational purposes of the school:

The educational programs of a school which include the objectives, materials selected, content outline, instructional procedures and assessments are aimed at accomplishing the basic educational purposes of the school. Without a clearly defined purpose the educational programs cannot be effectively identified or designed.

A short discussion of the position of essentialists, progressives and sociologists positions concerning what should be the educational purpose of the school should follow.

Essentialists- objectives should be chosen from the cultural heritage of the past

Progressives- study the child and base objectives on the interest of the child, his/her purposes of mind, and the problems he/she will encounter.

Sociologists- see schools as the agency for helping students deal effectively with the critical problems of contemporary life.

2.      After the need and importance of a well defined educational purpose has been discussed, faculty will divide into groups to study the following as sources of information for developing an educational purpose for the school (using Basic Principles of Curriculum and Instruction, Ralph W. Tyler, 1969.):

Learners Themselves

Contemporary Life outside the School

Subject Specialists

Philosophy

Psychology of Learning

3.      After the groups have studied the sources the entire group will reconvene. Each group will present the rational for using the source assigned to the group for determining educational purpose.  The entire group will discuss the findings presented by each group. The faculty will then use the presented information to determine the appropriate educational purpose(s) of the school.
