Assignment 6

1)      Intervention – A change in the instruction a student received in an area where he or she has a disability to improve learning and make necessary progress.  An example of intervention may be to use proximity to help a child or give visual as well as verbal directions.

2)      Accommodation – supports or services a student may need in order successfully learn material.  This does not change the material a child learns.  An example of an accommodation would be for a child to have additional time on a test, repeat directions or read the test to him or her.

3)      Modification – changes that are made in a child’s curriculum expectation to meet the needs of a student.  An example of a modification would be requiring fewer problems for an assignment or using lower level reading materials.

1)      Students with severe/profound disabilities are NOT required to participate in state and local assessments.

2)      “Extended time” is an example of a modification that can be applied to many state and local assessments with the understanding that the assessment will still be standardized.

3)      “Use of a calculator” is NOT an example of a intervention that can be applied to the math computation portion of state and local assessments with the understanding that the assessment will continue to be standardized. This would invalidate the test.  A calculator could be used on a math reasoning test.

4)      It is acceptable according to IDEA reauthorizations and NCLB for 1% or less of the local school student population to participate in an alternative assessment.

5)      Subgroups, such as special education students, who participate in alternative assessments, are considered as part of AYP (Annual Yearly Progress). This statement is true.
