- Provide
parents with information about any disabilities that will be served in the
classroom in order to ease fears and concerns.
- Have
parents complete and information sheet on his or her child. This would help the teacher to know
information about that child that may other wise be overlooked.
- Invite
parents to assist in the classroom.
This will allow parents to see what happens in the classroom as
well as help out at the same time.
- Conduct
IEP meetings with parents of students with disabilities prior to the
beginning of the new year. Discuss strategies and accommodations
that need to be made for the child to be successful.
- Provide
constant feedback to the parents about how their child is progressing in
class. The feedback can be done
through daily reports, phone calls, classroom visits and progress reports.
- Provide
parents with research on inclusion which explains that inclusion allows
students with disabilities to make more progress than if the students was placed in a self contained classroom.
- Encourage
parents to take an active role in their child’s education by monitoring
homework, supporting discipline decisions and assisting their child when a
teacher suggests an skill to practice at home.
- Provide
the parents with support and assistance when making important decisions
for their child. Explain to parents
all the options they have for their child.
Build trust with the parents so you can have an effective
relationship. Make sure parents
understand all technical and educational jargon used during meetings. Be sensitive to the parents’ feelings
and stress of being a parent of a child with a disability.
- Involve
parents of children with disabilities in school wide activities. Make sure any school wide activities
that are held allows for students with disabilities to participate in
them. Allow parents of children
with disabilities to participate in the school improvement planning
process.
- Provide
parents with information about their rights and provide them with resources
to go to for help (websites, books, etc.).
