LUSTER | JOAN W/Arthur

2004 was a big year for Joan. She began the year on tour with Rufus Wainwright and by June she had released her first solo ep. In between she found time to hook up with the brilliant Joseph Arthur for some three months of tour dates, and as with Wainwright Joan acted as accompanist and opening act. Joan had known Joseph through the close knit music scene in Brooklyn , notably Ben Perwosky who played on Arthur's Redemption Son. Joan recalls her first meeting with Joseph on the street in their neighborhood. " I was in my car and stopped and picked him up. He was like " Do you wanna make some music?" which usually means, you know, You wanna get down?, but he really meant playing music."

Joan was not altogether familiar with Arthur's work before their tour dates began, the pair found that it didn't create any significant problems since both musicians are renown improvisationalists. Arthur says of their vibe "Improvisation is her specialty. She's an incredible violinist. She's cool to perform with because she is so good that I can go in any direction without letting her know where I'm going to go beforehand." Joan is just as complimentary, " Joseph is one of those people who makes it up fresh, every night. He has a beautiful creative mind."
