“I believe him to be one of the best singers I’ve ever heard. He kills me!"
One of Joan’s longtime projects has been as a member of the modern cabaret act Antony and the Johnsons, with whom she has traveled the US and Europe as a violinist, arranger and singer. Joan began playing with the group, as a substitute violinist, in 2000 and says that due to the warmth between the players and Antony, “I had no choice but to stay.” The deep connection to Antony and his work was also due to the personal tumult that Joan was experiencing. "It was a relief to get back to being quiet and playing with other string players. I needed a place where I could feel safe and get through the changes that were happening to me."
The project began as a performance piece with song, but has been re-worked to focus more on the musical aspect bringing Joan and the rest of the Johnsons to the fore. The act has received global praise and boasts a devoted, high profile fan base. Lou Reed, Laurie Anderson and David Tibet are all friends, fans and frequent collaborators of the group.
In 2005, Antony and the Johnsons won the England's Mercury Prize for I Am a Bird Now, their release on the Secretly Canadian label
