" We wrote a lot of very black and beautiful and sad songs."

Like Debt and Departure , the Black Beetle project was, for Joan, a response to Jeff Buckley’s death and an attempt to reconcile herself to it. As she said at the time, “It was just away a getting ourselves through a tough period," But the bands inspiration soon broadened and their sound coalesced into something more mature. Joan and Michael Tighe shared the songwriting and vocal chores equally.

During the bands short life, Black Beetle was featured on MTV’s You Hear It First segment and in opening slots for Patti Smith at the Montreal Jazz Festival and Morrissey, experiences that Joan recalls fondly. “Opening for Patti Smith was pretty thrilling. She is one of the people who can really really rile up a crowd-a natural leader." Of the Morrissey gig she says, “The Smiths definitely changed my life, so it was major for me that he had chosen our band to open for him on his ‘I Haven’t Played for Forever' tour." Black Beetle also recorded an album, The Outsiders, which was shelved when the members left the group to pursue other projects.

However, in 2002 the French magazine Rock Sounds reviewed the album describing it as “groovy and modern." Adding that the music recalled everyone from John Lennon and Sly Stone to Around the World and a Day-era Prince and the Tom Tom Club. The band’s management has no plans to release the record at this time. Still, Black Beetle did contribute the track “Vanish" to the Brooklyn compilation This Is Next Year for Arena Rock records.
