DVD BURNING 101 (9/25/03)
So you want to learn about DVD burning aye? Well you have come to the right place. When you first start DVD burning there are tons of confusing things to worry about. First off is the different DVD formats.
Now a days the prevalent kinds of DVD media are DVD-R, DVD-RW, DVD+R, and DVD+RW. The difference between R and RW is just like with CD-Rs and CD-RWs. Rs are write once media, while RW are rewriteable.
The next thing to learn is the difference between "-" and "+" media. For all intensive purposes they are about the same, just different standards. When using DVD players for TVs not all of them support DVD-R/RW or DVD+R/RW, but right now it looks like more of them support the "-" media than the "+" media. Additionally "+" media is a little bit more expensive right now.
In terms of the actually burner, they "-", "+", and "-/+" DVD burners. The different kinds of burners burn the respective media.
For the DVD burning software I would recommend "DVD Copy XPRESS" and "Nero Burning Rom". XPRESS is good for making compressed archival backups of double layered DVDs. What does this mean? Most standard movie DVDs that you might buy in a store are double layered, meaning that they have larger capacity than the blank DVD media. Most blank DVD media has about a 4.7 GB capacity. So in order to make an archival backup of a DVD movie you need to use a program like XPRESS to compress it and fit it on the single layer 4.7 GB capacity DVD. The only down side of using XPRESS is that it does not allow you to copy the menus or special features. Nero is great for making data DVDs, it works just like making data CDs.
That is about all the basic stuff you need to know for making DVDs.
Sick of all those damn popup ads while you're surfing the internet? (8/21/03)
Well people that know me will attest that I probably spend too much time online and being antisocial, they will also tell you that I do know my computer stuff! I HATE popup ads! There are tons of free programs out there made specifically to block popup ads! I have tried many of them... a lot of them are complicated and don't even work half the time! But after extensive testing I have decided that the best popup stopper to get is:
This is by far the greatest popup blocker/stopper I have ever used... not only is it free but it is simple to use and best of all WORKS!
It is made by Panicware... unfortunately it can no longer be downloaded from their website... it used to be available for free from download.com but I have managed to find another site that has it (just click on the red links for the different programs). They have a new version out (Pop-up Stopper FREE Edition v3.1), but I really don't like that one... it just doesn't work as well. I have no idea why they wanted to change something that was absolute perfection! In any case if you're out there looking for a good and most importantly free popup blocker... then try to get Pop-up Stopper v2.8.
