UPN28/38’s Wrestler of the Week

(week ending 08/14/04)

John Cena

Accomplishment:

This week John Cena led Team Cena to victory in the first ever Summer Games relay match in WWE history.  The Doctor of Thuganomics serviced a five minute on slaught by Frenchman Rene Dupree and quickly finished off a fresh Booker T in less than 3 minutes.  Cena goes into SummerSlam to begin his best-of-5 series with Booker T for the U.S. Title.  The momentum from his Smackdown victory should help him in his quest to regain the U.S. title that had been stripped from him by the injury-feigning former GM Kurt Angle a few weeks ago.

Tidbits:

Cena begin his pro-wrestling career in California’s Ultimate Pro Wrestling (UPW) as the Prototype.  He was soon signed to a WWE developmental deal.  UPW’s status as a developmental territory was revoked and Cena moved to Louisville’s OVW to train under Jim Cornette and Danny Davis.  In OVW, The Prototype came in as Rico Constantino’s protégé and quickly captured the OVW championship.  Cena debuted on Smackdown with “ruthless aggression” two years ago accepting an open challenge from Kurt Angle and nearly toppling the Olympic Gold Medalist.  Cena even impressed the vereran Undertaker, as the dead man congratulated the new-comer after his match.  As an interesting tidbit, Cena incorporated his rapper gimmick into his repertoire after dressing up as Vanilla Ice on a Halloween episode of Smackdown!  The Doctor of Thuganomics first pinned the Big Show last December in Baghdad, Iraq in a non-title match.  Cena, however, did capture the coveted title from the big man at WrestleMania XX, but was stripped of the title several months later by the crooked GM Kurt Angle.  Cena is now after current champ Booker T.  Their best-of-5 series could bring back shades of the Booker T –Chris Benoit best-of-7 series from years gone by…
