This Week in WWE (updated 08/21/04)

The Young and the Restless

Intro:

Youth ruled RAW this week as Randy Orton became the youngest World Heavyweight Champion in the history of WWE, yet the remainder of Evolution was none too pleased with that achievement.   One Smackdown, there certainly were some restless superstars, as pre- and post match attacks were a-plenty. SummerSlam is in the books, but its aftereffects will be felt for months to come.

Raw Wrap-Up:

Randy Orton made history at SummerSlam by beating Chris Benoit to become the youngest WWE World Champion in history.  The next night he kicked off RAW London, Ontario, Canada, but his celebration was short-lived as Chris Benoit evoked his rematch clause that very night.  With some distraction from evolution, Orton was able to defeat Benoit for the second night in a row.  Evolution celebrated in the ring with the victor, but the whole world would soon see that it was all a ploy.   With Orton perched atop Batista’s shoulders seemingly in celebration, Triple H gave Batista the signal and down went Orton, back first to the mat.  The onslaught continues, as Batista delivered a Batista Bomb and Triple H executed a Pedigree to a prone, bloodied Orton.  Evolution’s solution for Randy Orton wasn’t quite what he had hoped….

Although Kane won his match against Matt Hardy at SummerSlam and thus the right to marry Lita, The Big Red Machine failed in his attempt to attain the IC title Monday Night in his match with Edge, due in part to interference from Lita and Matt Hardy…Rhyno and Taijiri earned the right to face La Resistance for the Tag Title at Unforgiven as Rhyno pinned Sylvan Grenier with the help of a little green mist from the Japanese Buzzsaw…Victoria came out on top in a great match against Gail Kim…In other Diva action, Michelle McCool was eliminated from the $250K Diva Search…After loosing to Edge at SummerSlam in a triple threat match, Batista and Chris Jericho faced each other one-on-one.  In another solid match, Batista lost by DQ when Ric Flair thwarted Jericho’s attempt at a LionSault

Next week, Kane and Lita tie the knot in the middle of the ring.  Happy ever after it may not be….

Smackdown! Wrap-Up:

Smackdown kicked off this week with an injured WWE Champion JBL.  After a long-winded promo, the Undertaker walks to the ring stalking the Champ.  JBL makes a quick retreat with Orlando Jordan through the crown, only after sitting on a fan….Spike beat Scotty 2 Hotty to retain the cruiserweight title.  Scotty was a victim of a post match attack by the three Dudleys.  In a following interview segment with John Cena, Spike got in Cena’s face after which Bubba and D-von jumped the Dr. of Thuganomics from behind.  This attack set up a match later in the night where John Cena soundly defeated D-von, while Booker T looked on.

RVD defeated Rene Dupree in a very competitive match after landing a five-star frog splash.   The post-match celebration bwas cut short by a blind-sided attack by the Bronze Warrior Kenzo Suzuki…In a non-title tag match, Chavo Guererro and Jamie Noble surprisingly upset the champs Paul London and Billy Kidman.  The upstart team surly has earned the right at a WWE title shot with this victory.

After being defeated by Kurt Angle, Eddie Guererro came to the ring and challenged angle to a match that very night.  Angle refused, but was persuaded to enter the ring and shake Eddie’s hand.  This was a Guererro set up as Eddie attacked Angle.  Luther Reigns ran to ringside to help Angle, but didn’t do much as Rey Mysterio stormed the ring to even up the odds.  In the main event Angle teamed with Reigns against Eddie and Rey.  Luther fell victim to a frog slash after Angle had deserted him in the ring.  Angle appeared to close out the show by dumping two cans of paint on Eddie’s low-rider.  Eddie was distraught after getting his new paint job, maybe he should keep it in the garage next time.

Next week, Heidenreich makes his Smackdown debut and match 2 of the best-of-five series between Booker T and John Cena for the US title will take place….Teddy Long announced the return of the Big Show, we’ll see if he makes an impact next week…

Odds and Ends:

WWE has bought out the remainder of Scott Steiner’s contract which was set to expire in october….The Rock is busy in Hollywood as he has signed on for yet a new movie, “Far Cry,” where he’ll star as an ocean patrol officer who must fight mercenaries on a deserted island….
