This Week in WWE (updated 08/07/04)

Brutal Beatings or Who’s Got your Back?

Intro:

This past week in WWE has shown that being a good guy does have its downfalls.  On RAW William Regal was viscously attacked by a sledgehammer-wielding Triple H, while Smackdown’s favorite luchador Rey Mysterio was sent through a table with the help of all three Dudley Boys.  As partnerships crumble, new alliances form.  On RAW we saw Chris Jericho and Edge, former allies, go at it.  This may be advantageous for Batista, who has a Triple Threat Match against the two for Edge’s IC title at SummerSlam.  Over on Smackdown, a new alliance seemed to form between Orlando Jordan and JBL, as Jordan saved JBL from a beating at the hands of the Undertaker, a former mentor of the Miami native.  One is lost without friends, but with friends like this, who needs enemies?

Raw Wrap-Up:

Triple H took some of his aggression from last week’s Eugene-tainted defeat by Chris Benoit on everyone’s favorite Brit, William Regal.   This bloody brawl was brutal from the beginning.    Regal attacked Triple H at the to of the ramp and the two fought down to the ramp.  Regal was almost too much for the former World Champ, as Triple H decked out Regal with a pair of brass knuckles and by doing so gave himself a DQ loss.  The viciousness only intensified as Triple H now gained control.  The Evolution member pulled sledgehammer from under the ring and after three shots with the massive mallet, one squarely on his face, Regal was sporting a neck brace and was strapped to a stretcher.

With Triple H wrapped up with Regal, the rest of Evolution had their hands full in a 6-man tag match against Chris Benoit, Edge and Chris Jericho.  Earlier in the night Edge and Jericho had had a bit of a scuffle during Jericho’s Highlight Reel segment.  This didn’t bode well for the faces, as miscommunication during the match lead to Jericho accidentally hitting Edge with a flying forearm.  This lead to a phenomenal exchange of signature moves among the wrestlers. Batista hits an impressive clothesline on Jericho.  Benoit catches Batista with a German suplex. Flair goes for the figure-four on Benoit, but the champ rolls it into a sharpshooter.   Orton then wins the match for his team after the RKO on Benoit.  A tremendous match was put on by all combatants.

In other action, Rhyno & Tajiri beat La Resistance in a non-title match.  This feud has dragged on for about a month now, and I gather next time we see these guys in the ring it will be for the tag titles. Tyson Tomko with Trish Stratus beat Rosey with Stacy Kiebler.  The highlight of this match was a Stacy cartwheel after a Rosey legdrop.  Maven wasn’t tough enough, as Kane soundly defeated him.  And for those interested (both of you), Diva search contestant Camille was sent packing.

Next week will be the last RAW before SummerSlam.   Will more matches and/or stipulation be named?  Tune into RAW this Monday night to find out…

Smackdown! Wrap-Up:

Smackdown kicked off with Teddy Long making a #1 contenders match between John Cena and RVD.  This phenomenal match came to a close when Cena hooked Mr. Thursday Night’s leg after RVD pulled off a superplex and attempted to roll over into a pinning position.  The two showed great sportsmanship with a handshake after the match.  After the bout Long announced a best-of-5 series for the U.S. title between Booker T and John Cena.  That’ll be one to watch!

Spike Dudley reunited with his evil brothers Bubba and D-von.  In a match where Spike teamed with Rey Mysterio against the Dudley Boyz, Spike feigned a leg injury only to double-cross Rey after the Dudley’s won the match with a 3-D.  The post match events involved Spike ordering Bubba and D-von to get the table and Spike stomping Rey, with the Cruiserweight title over him, through a press table.  Ouch…

The night ended with JBL calling out the Undertaker.  Well, a mini Undertaker did come out and JBL verbally berated him.  As JBL set the little person up for a Tombstone, the lights went out, and the Undertaker appeared in the ring.  As Undertaker was about to give JBL a preview of SummerSlam, Virgil, I mean Orlando Jordan who was once a protégé of the Dead Man, ran to the ring and pulled JBL out of harms way.   In frustration, the Undertaker polished off his mini-impersonator with a viscous chokeslam, as JBL and Jordan watched from the stage.  What’s the number for 9-1-1?

In other action, Eddie Guerrero enlisted the help of three Divas to continue to auction off some of Kurt Angle’s personal belongings.   Orlando Jordan upset Rene Dupree.  Angle, in his first televised match since WrestleMania, go the best of Charlie Haas cleanly applying the ankle lock after a vintage Angle Slam.   Billy Kidman and Paul London successfully defended their WWE tag team titles against the Bashams.

Next week:

Odds and Ends:

Sakoda, that stubby guy who teamed with Akio, has been released from WWE…WWE is in negotiations to bring in Bruno Sammartino to play a role in WWE 24/7…The Rock has gotten himself role in the Columbia Pictures football-saves-guy-from-prison movie “Gridiron Gang.”…The Hurricane has suffered a broken nose during his match with Chuck Palumbo on RAW, I guess his mask isn’t Palumbo-proof…And that’s a wrap…..

Thanks for reading and have a nice week,
