Musical chairs and cruiserweight tag champs…who’d of thunk it….

J.P. “the Newsletter Guy” presents: This Week in WWE

If the Undertaker can do it twice, why can’t I?  So I might not hail from Death Valley, stand 6’9” and weigh over 300 lbs…but once again, I’m back!!! Yes, the return of independent wrestling’s John the Newsletter Guy.  Hold your applause until the end of the column, please.  For those of you who know me, bear with me, and for everyone else you’ll get to know me a little better every week on this very website.  Every week, I’ll be providing (what I hope is) insightful and informative weekly highlights on the spectacle of kings we all know as professional wrestling.  Enough with the intro, let’s get things going.

Monday Night Raw began this past week with Evolution’s “special” member Eugene and a little game of musical chairs.  Chris Jericho beat Tyson Tomko to the last seat and earned himself an IC title shot later in the night to Legend Killer Randy Orton.  Orton, with the help of fellow evolution member Batista, left with his lengthy title reign intact after their grueling match.  Matt Hardy attacked Kane once again during a match to defend the honor of his girlfriend Lita, setting up their Vengeance match.  The night was capped off with Eugene, Triple H and Ric Flair defeating Chris Benoit and Edge in a 3 on 2 handicap match.

Thursday’s Smackdown! was highlighted by the crowning of two very unlikely tag-team champions.  Cruiserweights Billy Kidman and Paul London toppled 18-time tag team champions the Dudley Boyz after a London Superkick followed by Kidman’s Shooting Star Press.  In a show of great sportsmanship, members of the tag roster, including the Dudley’s were shown in the locker room congratulating the new champs.

JBL and El Gran Luchadore went to a no contest when a second masked luchadore appeared and with the help a banana peal distracted the ref and did a number on the reigning WWE champion.    The second luchadore looked familiar, but I can’t put my finger on it…In the main event of the night, U.S. champ John Cena was able to fend off attacks by Kenzo Suzuki, Luthor Reigns, and Kurt Angle to defeat #1 contender Booker T.  It was a bitter sweet victory, as Angle stripped Cena of the U.S. title as the show ended claiming Cena had assaulted him.

Next week begins with RAW’s Vengeance PPV.   The top of the card includes Chris Benoit facing the man he beat for the title Triple H,  IC champ Randy Orton defending against the emigma known as Edge and World Tag Team champions La Resistance facing the team of Ric Flair and Eugene.  The PPV’s aftermath will be seen the following night on RAW.

On Thursday night, Smackdown! emanates from my home town Providence, RI.  Questions concerning the status of the U.S. championship should be addressed that night as well and those concerning Paul Heymen’s plea to the Undertaker.  The card will be headlined by a WWE championship match pitting champ JBL against challenger Eddie Guerrero inside if a 15 ft. high steel cage.

Finally, if you have any comments, questions, or concerns about this column or professional wrestling in general, please contact me at [email protected].
