Introduction:

This is J.P. Brewski here with all the news that's worth printing and some just meant to fill space...

Welcome to my debut issue of the Wrestling News Weekly Review newsletter.  Below you'll find a spoiler free look into the weird, wacky, wonderful world of professional wrestling.

The Week's Biggest News:

WWF:

---With the XFL airing on NBC and with the fact that NBC owns half of the league, and has a 3% equity stake in the WWF, the next few weeks will become interesting to see who will wind up with WWF’s wrestling programming…

--Look for Triple H to hold on to the title until about SummerSlam., with the Rock then picking up the strap then, setting up a feud with a returning Stone Cold Steve Austin…Although this is the most logical scenario, the WWF has been known to give us a swerve now and then…

--The radicals look to be going there separate ways, or at least for now, they seem to be developing their own personas., this newsletter guy thinks that a couple months from now we should be seeing a couple inter-Radical feuds.

WCW:

--Eric Bischoff and Vince Russo, starting this week, will be tagging up to produce WCW programming.  Only time will tell if these two egomaniacs can turn WCW 180 degrees.

--Hulk Hogan had some interesting comments, to say the least, regarding the younger talent in WCW.  It was mainly of preview the upcoming “youth” vs. “age” story line in WCW.  Yet, knowing Hogan, that interview could have been taken as a shoot…

--Sid may be stripped of the title as early as this Monday night, setting up a tournament to crown the first WCW heavyweight champion for the New Era.

Other:

--ECW Heavyweight Champion, Mike Awesome is rumored to be headed for WCW according to some unconfirmed wrestling report on http://www.pwbts.com

--Lord Steven Regal has been active in Jerry Lawler’s MCW.  Himself, Lawler, Bull pain and Masked Man #1 were involved in a four way match to crown the first MCW champion.  According to Lance Russel, MCW announcer, the MCW title lineage will be that of the Southern Heavyweight Title, which was most prominently used in Lawler’s USWA.

--Abdullah the Butcher is actively participating in NWA/NCW Wild Side.  He recently grotesquely carved his way through former Frenchy Riviera on Wild Side TV.

--In total there is a 4.5 hour wrestling block on America One:  Ultimate Pro Wrestling at 8:30pmET, MCW at 9pmET, NWA WildSide at 10pmET, XPW at 11pmET, and ECW at Midnight.  Unfortunately A1 stations are usually low power, with limited broadcasting range.

--The stars will be out for the nterpromotional Brian Pillman Memorial Card. Attendees will include Ric Flair, the HeadBangers, Rickishi Phatu, Jim Ross, Rob Van Dam, among others…

--XPW aired their debut TV show this weekend.  XPW officials used this show to familiarize the fans with the history and stars of XPW.  The following program will continue with this theme.  This promotion has some very able and familiar stars, and given time and luck, could be a top contender for the #3 wrestling promotion in the country…Wrestlers include Shane Douglas, Chris Candido w/Tammy, Ian Rotten and Jimmy the Homeless Guy…

The Weekly Rant:

This week good ol’ J.P. will address the biggest misnomer in professional wrestling “Independent Wrestling.”  Are such minor league promotions truly independent?  Do they not depend on the Big Two or Big Three being WWF, WCW and, arguably, ECW?  Why certainly they do…

For this reason J.P. says why not refer to these minor league promotions as “Semi-Pro” wrestling leagues.  These guys are not pro wrestlers 24/7, but have jobs outside the sport, when the lights dim and the ropes come down…

In what way can these organizations claim to be independent if they rely on fellow wrestling groups for wrestlers, rings, referees and the like.  Do they not also depend on big name wrestlers to boost attendance?  What about depending on people to come and pay their $7 or so for the show?  If anything these promotions should be called Dependent Professional Wrestling.  But alas, The Big Brewski does call the pro wrestling world to refer to these promotions by a less misleading name, Semi-Pro Wrestling.

And, like it or hate it, that’s J.P. Brewski’s rant for the week….
