Introduction:
This is the J.P. Brewski here with all the news that's worth printing and some just
meant to fill space...
Welcome
to my debut issue of the Wrestling News Weekly Review newsletter. Below you'll find a spoiler free look into
the weird, wacky, wonderful world of professional wrestling.
The Week's
Biggest News:
WWF:
---The WWF move from the USA network to CBS looks
imminent; more developments from this story should be available by the end of
the week.
--Look for Mick Foley to go out with a Bang! Bang!
at Wrestlemania, retiring as champion, and setting up a tournament for the
vacant title which will culminate at the Backlash PPV.
--The Rock's appearance on SNL scored an 8.2 rating.
WCW:
--The Nitro and Thunder for April 3rd and 4th
respectively have been cancelled due the restructuring of the organization. That is, the redebuting of the Vince
Russo/Eric Bischoff writing team.
--Internet rumor has it that Randy Savage and Shane
Douglas may be again interested in coming back to WCW, due to WCW's changing of
the guard.
--Gorgeous George, Savage’s former valet is starring
in a solo video, look for it in the back section of your favorite video store
next to Chastity’s Live Bait and
Beulah’s video debut…
Other:
--New Jack and Tommy Dreamer from ECW have filmed an
episode of CBS's Early Edition scheduled to air in several weeks.
--Memphis Championship Wrestling has replaced NWA
WorldWide on the 9pm eastern timeslot on the America One Network.
--It has also been confirmed by A1 that XPW
("Xtreme Professional Wrestling") http://xpwrestling.com has obtained
an 8pm time slot on America One Network scheduled to begin airing on April 7.
--In total there will be a 4.5 hour wrestling block
on America One: XPW at 8pmET, MCW at 9pmET, NWA WildSide at 10pmET, Ultimate
Pro Wrestling at 11pmET, Paid Program at 11:30pmET and ECW at Midnight. Unfortunately A1 stations are usually low
power, with limited broadcasting range.
--Look for more news soon on the interpromotional
Brian Pillman Memorial Card in a future Newsletter.
--Jim “The Anvil” Neidhart and a trim Blue Meanie
are currently tagging up in MCW and of this publishing have the MCW tag titles.
The Weekly
Rant:
This week I’ll address the
biggest misnomer in professional wrestling “Independent Wrestling.” Are such minor league promotions truly
independent? Do they not depend on the
Big Two or Big Three being WWF, WCW and, arguably, ECW? Why certainly they do…
For this reason I say why
not refer to these minor league promotions as “Semi-Pro” wrestling
leagues. These guys are not pro
wrestlers 24/7, but have jobs outside the sport, when the lights dim and the
ropes come down…
In what way can these
organizations claim to be independent if they rely on fellow wrestling groups
for wrestlers, rings, referees and the like.
Do they not also depend on big name wrestlers to boost attendance? What about depending on people to come and
pay their $7 or so for the show? If
anything these promotions should be called Dependent Professional Wrestling. But alas, I do call the pro wrestling world to
refer to these promotions by a less misleading name, Semi-Pro Wrestling.
And, like it or hate it, that’s my rant for the week….
