Learn Japanese: Lesson 2

 Basic Sentences

Using the information from lesson one I have put together a number of sentences so you can get the jist of it.

I will give the sentence in Japanese and then the definition.  In parentheses is the literal translation.

 

  1. Kore wa hon desu. This is a book (This book is)

 

  1. Kore wa akai hon desu. This is a red book (This red book is)

 

  1. Sore wa kuroi hon desu ka? Is that a black book? (That black book is?)

 

  1. Iie, ki-iro hon desu.  No, it’s a yellow book. (No, yellow book is)

 

  1. Kore wa nan desu ka?  What is this? (This what is?)

 

  1. Isu desu.  It’s a chair. (chair is)

 

  1. Are wa nan desu ka? What is that over there? (that over there what is?)

 

  1. Tsukue desu.  It’s a desk. (Desk is)

 

  1. Sou ne?  Really?

 

  1. Hai, sou desu. Yes, it is. 

 

  1. Sugoi! Awesome!

 

We will go into more advanced sentences later, these are just to start you off.
