Personal Statement
For the past three years, I have worked as a Computer Literacy
Teacher with the New Castle County Vocational Technical School district’s
Multiple Alternative Program and night school program. These programs are
designed to give high school “drop-outs” the chance to get their diplomas
and possibly go on to college.
As a Computer Literacy teacher I teach introduction
to computers, which covers understanding of the computer device itself, what
it does, how it knows what to do, its main components, etc. The course covers
Keyboarding and knowledge in and usage of various software applications like
Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint, and the Internet. I also teach Career
Pathways, a course designed to match students personal interests, values,
and aptitudes with an appropriate career path while developing skills for
employment.
My desire to become a teacher began a few months after
completing my undergraduate degree when I joined an AmeriCorps program. The
program was called AmeriCorps KickStart and was designed to provide refurbished
computers, technical support, and basic computer training in K-12 schools
and non-profit organizations throughout the state of Delaware. It was in
this program that I learned to teach. I also discovered that I truly enjoy
teaching. I find it extremely rewarding to teach someone a skill they will
have for the rest of their lives, especially when they have serious doubts
about their ability to learn something new.
