Art and Sex: A Case Study of a Homosexual Man
Art and Sex: A Case study of a Homosexual Man:

In this paper Freud drew many conclusions about homosexual men.  He called this "his first definitive insight into the mind of a homosexual man".  In his paper as mentioned before he found that when a homosexual man was approaching his mental breakdown or on the verge of the mental breakdown a series of characteristics manifest themselves.  These include, but are not limited to...repetative use of words inappropriate in everyday conversation (ie penis or rectum).
The use of a girlfriend as a kind of screen to their homosexual desires.  An extreme attachment to their mother both as a young child and as an adult.  The extreme use of beauty products, these include but are not limited to creams, and lotions.  A fascination with the lifestyle of other homosexuals.  An extreme sense of humor as well as crude jokes.  Although, when approached about these types of exploits they seem to be disturbed by them.  They are also overly in-touch with their bodies.  Constantly grooming, or working out.  Many homosexuals are extremely talkative, Freud conjectured that this was a defensive tactic to avoid other people questioning them directly about themselves.

The man in this study was from France, and had travelled to many areas of the world, including South America and Southeast Asia.  Freud found that many homosexuals have a fondness of traveling, although he did not draw any reasons as to why.  The student also exhibited a fascination with making or purchasing "phalic devices" and then displaying them in public and seeing people's reaction.  Freud explains this by saying "...it is clear to me that this behavior is a subconscious manifestation of the need to find a prospective mate in the sexually suppressive society that we live in.  By obtaining reactions, he was able to approach males that seemed to enjoy it".  Indeed, recent studies that I have conducted in fact prove that homosexuals that are either mentally repressing their homosexuality, or are repressed by the society they live in will use such methods to find friends and/or lovers.

Freud had associated many mental illnesses with the inability of homosexuals to express their feelings these include:

1.
Borderline Personality Disorder - trait that reflects inflexible and maladaptive patterns of behavior characterized by unpredictable actions, mood instability, and unstable interpersonal relationships.

2.
Specific/Simple Phobia - an illogical but real and intense fear of an object of situation such as dogs, germs, flying, etc.

3.
Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD) - a condition marked by persistent and recurring thoughts (obsessions) typically reflecting exaggerated anxiety or fears that have no basis in reality; sufferers often feel compelled to perform a ritual or routine to help relieve anxiety caused by their obsession; sufferers typically realize the ritual or compulsion makes no sense yet feel powerless to stop.

Before Freud's death on September 23rd 1939 he had started work on a second edition of this paper where he looked into a separation of Father and Mother as a possible reason for homosexuality.  This paper was never completed, and is very hard to obtain.
