Janpha Thadphoothon’s 2002 Annual Progress Report

Dear Divisional Higher Degrees Committee, University of Canberra

I would like to report my study progress as follows:

1. At present, I am in the early stage of Part B of the Degree 352 Doctor of Education. Over the year, I have actively engaged in several academic activities. I have completed the two required subjects (12 Points): 004595 Studies in Edu Theory/Practice M and 004596 Studies in Learning & Instruction. This semester, 2/2002, I am taking two subjects of Part B: (1) M 004591 Edu Professional Doctoral Thesis D: PT, (2) 004593 Edu Professional Doct Thesis Prep D: PT.

2. So far, I have presented two papers at two conferences. The first (as previously mentioned) was at the Information Technology and Universities in Asia or ITUA 2002 International Conference, held at Chulalongkorn University Bangkok on April 4-5, 2002. The title was: “ Enhancing Critical Thinking in Language Learning through Computer-Mediated Collaborative Learning.” Please visit http://pioneer.netserv.chula.ac.th/~hsoraj/IT/ITUAProgram.pdf for more information.

The second presentation, titled “ ELT Today: A Reverse Genealogical Perspective”, was at DPU 2002 Conference at Dhurakijpundit University, Bangkok, on May 1, 2002.

In the near future, I will join two conferences, and I am going to present my papers at both conferences. The first one is at the School of Languages Post graduate Conferences 2002, University of Melbourne, on 18-19 October 2002. The title is “ The Relationship between Test Anxiety, Perceived English Ability, and the Speaking Test Scores.” Please visit http://www.languages.unimelb.edu.au/pgradconf/timetable.htm for more information.

The second conference that I will attend and present my paper is at the International Conference in Computers in Education or ICCE 2002 on December 3-6 2002 at Auckland, New Zealand. At this conference, I am going to present my thesis’s preliminary investigation titled “Enhancing critical Thinking in Language Learning through Computer-Mediated Collaborative Learning: A Preliminary Investigation.”  Please visit http://icce2002.massey.ac.nz/ for more information.

3. I plan to run my initial seminar by the end of November this year. The title of the seminar will be “Enhancing Critical Thinking in Language Learning: A Proposed Intellectual Framework.”  At present, I am working towards this seminar.

4. I have contributed significantly to the 2002/2 Intellectual Seminar facilitated by the Lians, Professor Andrew Lian and Ania Lian, at the School of Languages and International Education, the University of Canberra. So far this semester I have presented the following articles:

-         A Portrait of the Artist as an English Teacher (The Calling of an English Instructor). Visit http://www.geocities.com/janphajustincase/portrait.html for more information.

-         Computer-Adaptive Test of Vocabulary Ability

-         A Positivist Perspective of Model Construction & Validation (In the context of linear structural relation or LISREL)

-         The Relationship between Test anxiety, Perceived English Ability, and the Speaking Test Scores (Draft Only)

-         A Report on the Students’ Attitudes Towards a New Speaking Test. Visit http://www.geocities.com/janphaact/report_speaking.html for more information.

Additionally, I have actively attended UC Ed. D Seminar Series facilitated by the program convener Dr. John Collard. I also enjoy participating in the Socrates Café facilitated by Dr Christina Slade. Both activities are a monthly event.

5. As a scholarship holder from Dhurakijpundit University, a private university on the outskirts of Bangkok, Thailand, I am determined to complete the program within the time period of my scholarship, which is within three years. I would like to complete my program by July 2004. I am confident and determined to achieve this goal.

6. As my research involves extensive online communication, I would like to have some space on the UC server, including the right to execute my database program (.ASP). The request is only for a limited time. I am very satisfied with the working space as well as the facilities UC are offering. The current supervisory time for me is adequate.
