Star Students of the Week
We take turns honoring each child as a Scarbro Kindergarten Star Student of the Week.  Here are some of the special activites we do to develop self esteem and reward great school performance, while developing literacy skills in all students.
Here is a sample of the letter I send home to our parents of our Star Student of the Week......

Congratulations!  Your child has been selected to be our Star Student of the Week! Please help your child complete this form and return it to school with some pictures of your child from birth to the present. These pictures will be placed on our Star Student of the Week Board and returned to you on Friday.

Here you see David's display for the week.  He is pointing to his special book. Each child writes a page about David to add to the book.
We also do these activites with David's name:
1. We cheer and spell David's name-
"Give me a D!"
Kids yell,"D".
"
Give me an a! "    Kids yell, "a".
"
Give me a v! "      Kids yell , "v".
"
Give me an i!  "    Kids yell, "i".
"
Give me a d!"      Kids yell, "d".
"
What's that spell?" "David!"
"S
ay it again...."         "David!"
"L
ouder".....                 "David."
"W
hisper it.... "             "David."
2.
Next, we do the cha-cha-cha while saying  David's name.
3. We take the letter cards for David's name out of the letter pocket and take turns putting them back in the correct order to spell David's name.  While we are doing this, we sing
The Jeopardy Song...'Dah dah dah dah etc."
4. David writes his name on the markerboard using a red marker to write the vowel letters and a black marker to write the consonants.  We add how many of each letter and see if we can find other words in the classroom that contain these letters.
5. We use rhythm sticks to tap out the syllables in David's name. Then we identify other words that have the same number of syllables.
