B.E.A.R. is an acronym for Bring Everything Always Ready. These books are in a 3-ring binder , put together by the teacher that houses EVERYTHING students and parents need to keep up with what is going on at school. No more wrinkled papers in the bottom of our backpacks. No more lost notes, newsletters or calendars. No more searching the house to find paper to write the teacher a note. Everything is in one notebook!
Why are they important? These notebooks helps students establish good organizational skills their first year of school - skills that can carry on throughout their time in school.

A zipped pencil pouch is in the front of each bear book to hold lunch or milk money or "beary important notes."
B.E.A.R. books include a special section for our school parent handbook and our poetry journals. Lists such as the names of classmates and popcorn words are also there. I use plastic page protector inserts for important lists.

Reading Logs are included in our B.E.A.R. books. This form includes columns showing the : 1. Date 2. Name of book 3. Person read to 4. Comments Chilldren and parents record the books they have shared together.
During the day we keep our B.E.A.R. books on this binder shelf that I purchased from www.reallygoodstuff.com. B.E.A.R. books go home everyday! This is fifth year using B.E.A.R. books. Children are very proud of their books, and parents know just where to look for important information.
Above are a couple of samples for the communication section. This section has notebook paper for two-way communication-no more fumbling for a piece of paper to write the teacher a note! I include a pen or a sharpened or mechanical pencil, to make things easier for busy parents. I use post-it note flags to mark important messages.
Students keep copies of the poems used for shared reading in their B.E.A.R. books.

1. Zippered 3 ring Pencil pouch - add a sticker made on Avery computer lables to stick on the plastic part that says - Beary Important Notes or Lunch Money. 2. Slash pocket folder-the sticker on the front reads BEARY Important 3. Slash pocket folder: SIGN and Return - here we put papers that parents need to sign and return to me such as permission slips. 4. Two pocket folder. Sticker: Keep at Home: This is where the kids put their papers to keep at home. 5.Class List: I do a lot with the kid's names and the literacy research now documents what a powerful tool this is. I make a list of classmates' first names, in alphabetical order for children's B.E.A.R. books. This will change a few times during the year when new kids move in. 6. Poetry Treats: As we learn a new poem, we add copies to each child's B.E.A.R. book. This powerful tool encourages rereading. I print them on colored Xerox paper, and place two poems, front to back inserted into a page protector. Children will have dozens of poems and nursery rhymes in their books by the end of the year. 7 An alphabet chart printed on heavy cardstock paper. 8. Family/Teacher Communications: This is the a very easy way to promote two - way ongoing communications. I start the communication at the beginning of the year with such things as "Joshua had a great day... He only cried a minute, and then played with Kaleb in the block center." The next day Joshua's mom wrote back: "Joshua loves kindergarten... I was so afraid to leave him crying, but he talked our heads off last night... " I've added a mechanical pencil or pin so parents have everything they need to write me. WARNING: You have to train the kids to tell you, "My mommy wrote you a note today." Otherwise you have to search through the books every morning, and who has time for that! It helps to provide post-it note flags for parents to flag an important message. 9. Calendars and SchoolNewsletters are slipped into plastic page inserts. 10. New for 2005- Behavior Sticker Chart
