POEM OF THE MOMENT!
The Bluegill I Deserve
Written by: Jacquii Cooke

I caught clams in
the Puget Sound,
digging in the sand
like an old drunk
vagabond searching for a dime
or quarter, or a penny
or home, or life

Those clams,
they made for excellent soup -
they did.
Soup so thick, so delicious
to the palate, 'twas a pallet
of robust flavor
my lips steady tremble
with the mere remembrance of it:
my tongue wet,
wanting more
and craving the toasted
bun,
garlic sauce and calamari
that made the meal
a meal

They called it chowder.
I called it sumptuous.

Complete and thorough I caught clams.
The sand was
between my toes,
my smock dirty, my knees
tired and steady -
I wanted more, I
wanted better,
maybe a fishing pole,
perhaps a bluegill, rainbow
trout, chips & hushpuppies,
tartar sauce

Call me of the South.
The sumptuous South.

Bio:
Jacquii Cooke is a 29 year old African American poet whom currently resides in her hometown of Oak Ridge, Tennessee. She has written since grade-school and more recently has committed to making a career of sharing her poetry. Jacquii's poetry is about dealing with the harsh realities of overcoming life's obstacles by championing courage, irony, wit & spirituality. She is currently seeking publication for her first poetry collection Obsession With Technicolor - Preface to a Memoire in Epiphany which focuses on redemption and righting wrongs for past transgressions.

"Mine is an autobiography in prose poetry format which transcends the immediate setting and explores and reveals themes that are universal - Man's faith, his relationship with his fellows and to the natural world," reveals an excited Jacquii about her poetry collection. "I should hope to liken myself to a modernday Maya Angelou or Langston Hughes."
