On Insomnia

Sleep toys with me
like a kitten with his ball of yarn
swinging me back and forth
from dreamless sleep to wakefulness

Multitude of unfinished business
bombard my mind
torturing me to light up the screen
and stare into meaningless space
until my eyes prick my brain
with a headache

When sleep allows me a fitful rest
dawn is marching towards daylight
as the first act of my dream displays
the alarm wails like a siren
forcing the headache back to open my eyes
and face a new day
