WILL YOU WAIT FOR ME?
Sung by: Kavana
Written by: Mainime

A lone figure stood on a grassy hilltop, oblivious of the dark clouds gathering in the sky and the cold winds blowing through the trees. He was a young man of twenty or so, but he looked years older. He had strange ocean-blue eyes and dark-brown hair and a muscular frame.

"I need to talk to you again, why did you go away?
All our time together still feels like yesterday.
I never thought I'd see a single day with out you.
The things we take for granted we can sometimes lose"

The faint glow of the sunset washed over him, making him look like a marble statue, except for the occasional flex of his breathing. In his hands, he held a single white rose and a heart-shaped pendant. As Heero looked down on the gravestone, he shuddered.

"And if I promise not to feel this pain, will I see you again?
Will I see you again?"

The body buried underneath him was finally at peace. But he was repulsed at the idea that they would lay her in the earth and let her beauty decay. Even in her death, she looked as if she was only asleep, dreaming of peace, beautiful dreams of those she loved. The crowds were long gone, and he was left alone with his thoughts. Mainly, of her.

"As time will pass me by, maybe I'll never learn to smile.
But I know I'll make it through, if you wait for me."

'Did shedid she ever dream of me?' he thought, as he looked at the inscription on the gray tombstone. It was a well-written one. He had composed it when she died. It was a hard task, even harder than having to kill a thousand men, for he knew that she was gone from his life, perhaps forever.

"And all the tears I cried, no matter how I tried, they'll never bring you home to me.
Won't you wait for me in Heaven?"

He had never been one to express his feelings. He was a man of few words, but in her presence, he melted and words were simply not enough to tell her how she made him feel. She had opened his heart and entered it, making him a new person. It was because of her that he finally knew what life was all about. A tear ran down his cheek and he made no effort to brush it off.

"Do you remember how it was, when we never seemed to care?
The days went by so quickly, and I thought you'd always be there"

In her, he had experienced a new kind of emotion. One that consumed him and made him what he was now. Duo called it love, but he knew that there were different kinds of love. The concern he felt for his fellow pilots was a brotherly love. But what he felt for her was a more intense love. It was a soul-consuming love, wherein one couldn't live without the other.

"And it's hard to let you go, though I know that I must try.
I feel like I've been cheated, cause we never said goodbye"

It was hard for him to accept her death. All throughout the week of her funeral, he had refused to eat and he didn't want to attend the burial. Seeing her in that coffin, surrounded by white lilies had almost driven him insane. He still wasn't convinced that she was dead. He kept insisting that she was merely sleeping and it wasn't until Duo hit him that he gave in to the reality.

"And if I promise not to feel this pain, will I see you again?
Will I see you again?"

"Heero! Ahou ga! She's dead! Don't you see? 'Jousan's DEAD!" Duo broke down in tears although he kept hitting Heero's shoulders. "HeeroHeero no baka! S-she's DEAD!" It was then that he knew that she was truly gone. He had been alone for many years before and when she came and showed him how to feel again, he thought he would never be alone anymore.

"As time will pass me by, maybe I'll never learn to smile.
But I know I'll make it through, if you wait for me.
Won't you wait for me?"

But she had promised that she would not say goodbye. She would not, for his sake, for everyone's sake, she would not say goodbye. Having said that, she died, with a smile on her lips. Why did she have to be taken away from him? The only thing that mattered to him was gone.

"And all the tears I cried, no matter how I tried, they'll never bring you home to me.
Won't you wait for me in Heaven?"

Heero bent down to read the inscription, unmindful of the rain that started to pour. 'Even the sky is mourning her loss,' he thought to himself. This is what the inscription said: "She came and went as quickly as the spring. And when she gave, she gave all. She saved many lost souls and offered comfort to those in need of her gentleness. We will miss this driving force of peace, especially this man, whom she taught to live. The man she saved from eternal damnation who has and will always love her..."

"Cause I miss you so, and I need to know, will you wait for me?"

Gently, he placed the rose in the slender vase he had bought. It was all he could do to keep from breaking down into tears. The rain began to pour steadily, drenching him. But he didn't seem to notice. All his thoughts were on the earth beneath his feet. Six feet under him was his angel, finally relieved of the heavy responsibility that she bore. Finally removed of the heavy burden that was placed, almost willingly, on her slender shoulders.

"As time will pass me by, maybe I'll never learn to smile.
But I know I'll make it through, if you wait for me.
Say you'll wait for me.

And all the tears I cried, no matter how I tried, they'll never bring you home to me.
Won't you wait for me in Heaven?
As time will pass me by, maybe I'll never learn to smile.
But I know I'll make it through, if you wait for me"

Heero gave one final sigh and wiped away another tear. All of a sudden, the sky cleared up and the sun's orange rays seemed to illuminate the skies. A soft breeze blew through the trees and suddenly he heard a girl's clear soprano ring through the cemetery. "I will be right here waiting for you" And then he smiled. Heading back to his car, he thought he heard another voice. This time, in a whisper, it said the age-old words that had saved his soul.

"I love you, always and forever"
