Disclaimer: Don't own Sailor Moon or anything of that sort. Naoko does so don't look at me. Short and sweet no?

"No! I will not do it!" the yell echoed through the quiet palace and those fortunate to have rooms near the main sleeping quarters, awoke, wondering what had disturbed their peaceful sleep.

Hearing nothing after that outburst, many fell back once more into the arms of slumber while others grumbled about a certain spoiled princess having her way much too often.

Meanwhile, in one of the sleeping quarters, a young woman stamped her foot in anger as sparks shot out of her blue eyes as she glared at her mother. "No Mother, I will not do it, you cannot make me!"

Queen Serenity sighed and stared at her daughter, heiress to the Moon Kingdom, in exasperation.

"Serenity, please listen to yourself. You are making this more difficult than it is. This is your life and as a princess you should accept it."

Serena (as she was known by all her friends) gasped in outrage, "Mother! You are talking about this as if it were an everyday thing. I do not take getting married to a stranger as something that happens everyday! How could you do this to me? Do I not even get a choice in the matter?"

"Unfortunately, or fortunately, however you look at it, no. You do not get a choice in this. This marriage will be beneficial to everyone if you would just calm down and think sensibly. Earth is in a very tumultuous situation right now and your marriage to its prince will further strengthen the alliance between the Earth and our home, the Moon.

Please Serena, understand that I wouldn't let you be married off to a complete stranger just like that. Prince Endymion is a very decent man who would take care of you and protect your well being."

"Speaking of which, how does he feel about this?" Serena asked.

"He has agreed, fully and completely."

Serena rolled her eyes at that. 'Yeah right, he's probably arguing with his parents at this very moment just like me.'

She couldn't believe this was happening to her. Marriage was one of the last things on her mind and then this very evening her mother decided to make the announcement at dinner without even talking to her first!

She had almost fallen off her chair in shock. There had been no warning whatsoever and she knew her mother had planned it that way and now the whole palace and soon the kingdom would be expecting her to carry out her 'duty'.

She had two days before this prince was to arrive, this man that would become her husband. She shuddered at the thought.

"Tell me Mother, how is it that I don't remember this betrothal? I remember quite a few things when I was eight, how come I don't remember this?"

Queen Serenity sighed and looked at her daughter, who had turned away from her to look out at the balcony.

She looked upward and whispered "Forgive me," before striding to her daughter and placing her hand on her shoulder.

"Serena," she began softly, "we've been through this before. A few days after the documents were signed, you fell deeply ill with a high fever and the doctors said that because your body went through such a trial, your mind immediately blocked any memories of what had happened before the fever. That is why you do not remember anything."

Serena turned then and her mother saw that she still had quite a fight left in her. She then decided to use the only last weapon she had left, guilt.

"Please Serena, think about the welfare of your future kingdom. Our people need to be in good hands and Earth is exactly what they need by their side. Please Serena, I'd like to see you well protected if.... in case anything happens to me. I'd like to know that I shan't have to worry about you once I'm not there."

'Oh no,' Serena thought, 'the guilt trip,' she knew she had it coming and even as her mother spoke she could feel her walls of defense beginning to crumble. Damn.

"But mother, I am a warrior! I do not know how to even act as a proper lady."

It was her last desperate attempt and by the light in her mother's eyes, it was a very weak one.

"Well Serena, then you shall learn. Starting tomorrow I will begin teaching you and by the time the prince comes, which will be the next day, you will impress even the goddess of the Moon."

"But I have to train with the other Scouts! They need me!"

"No buts Serena, you will end your training, for now at least, and meet me in the dining room tomorrow at noon sharp. Will you comply?"

'This is it,' Serena thought, 'I hand over my freedom right now with just two words.' Her eyes felt hot but she stopped the tears before they could fall. 'I will not cry about this,' she told herself adamantly, 'I will not cry.'

"I shall."

"Son, she has finally agreed."

"Has she? Completely?"

"Yes, we will be leaving for the Moon day after tomorrow. Take whatever is necessary."

"Yes Father," he watched the older man walk away and then turned back to look up into the sky. The Moon, his future home, was quite bright that night, standing out amongst all the stars in the black sky.

"Your Highness."

"Hey Darien!"

He turned and grinned at the voices. Kunzite and Jadeite, two of his best friends, stood before him. Kunzite, ever the formal one, stood straight, in a soldier stance, while Jadeite leaned against the wall, totally relaxed, his eyes alight with mischief.

"Please Kunz, give our friend a break. It's bad enough he has to hear that title all day, he doesn't have to hear it from you too."

"Unlike you, Jed, he has some manners."

Jadeite snorted then looked at his prince, "We've heard the news and came to congratulate you. Congratulations are in order aren't they?"

Satisfied that there was no one around, Kunzite relaxed and grinned at his friend, "So our friend's bachelor days are over, huh?"

"Not for another day," Darien shot back. He pushed a hand through his jet-black hair and turned back towards the balcony railing, "I just don't like this at all. I knew this day would come up sooner or later but now that it's here, I'm not ready. I don't want to get stuck with a wife. I haven't even seen this girl."

Kunzite patted Darien's shoulder, "I've heard rumors that she's not that bad too look at."

Jadeite came up on Darien's other side, "Rumors, Kunz, they're just rumors. What if she's this ugly witch with-"

"Jadeite! There's no need to scare Darien away this early," although his tone was reprimanding, he was smiling slightly.

"By the way Darien," Jadeite asked cautiously, "does Princess Serenity know about the...about how-?"

He sighed and hung his head for a moment and then turned to the two, "No she doesn't. And from what I've heard about her personality, when she does, there will be hell to pay."

End.
