Starsky & Hutch

One Moment

(Gillian – Hutch)

His feet weren’t on the ground where they were supposed to be. His head wasn’t where it was supposed to be either. He was with Gillian, instead of in that alley with Starsky. Instead of covering his partner’s back, which is what partners did, he was thinking about her.

One second he was focussed, the next he saw a vision of himself. His body was covered in blood as he lay motionless on the pavement, leaving behind a grieving Gillian, who he loved more than he had ever loved a woman before.

What if he got killed?? What if he died before they could start their life together? An intense feeling of fear swept over of him. It was so overwhelming that it was as if time stood still. All he could hear was the sound of Gillian sobbing. All he could see were the tears streaming down her grief stricken face. He was scared. What if…

Sounds of guns firing, and a familiar voice calling out his name suddenly penetrated the fog in his brain that had temporarily shut him off from the outside world. He found himself in the alley again. Back in reality.

O no, Starsky!

Thank God, Starsky was alright, and Hutch automatically reacted as he was supposed to do. Once again, he was a cop.

Better late than never, a little voice inside his head sarcastically said.

He was a police officer, in his case there was no "better late than never", because "too late" was enough to cost his partner's life.

Hutch was furious with himself for freezing the way that he did when Starsky needed him. He was also angry with Starsky because he tried to brush it all off as if nothing had happened.

“Your mind was elsewhere.”

Words that were meant to keep him from going on a guilt trip.

Starsky knew him so well.

One moment was all it took to turn his life up side down.

One moment of falling in love.

One moment of happiness.

One moment of freezing in a dirty alley with a gun in his hand and with his partner at his side while chasing a suspect.

One moment of realization; where fear had taken control of his body and mind. One moment that could have turned deadly for Starsky. He could have been killed by the bullets flying around. It didn't happen, but it could have. Hutch shook his head in frustration. All it took was one moment to make him see things clearly again. It was almost one moment too late.
