| Sincerity works for real-life sisters Janice & Gelli |
| How time flies. Who would believe that the morning show of real-life sisters Janice and Gelli de Belen ("Sis" on GMA 7) has already marked a milestone of two years since it first aired? It was not exactly smooth sailing for the hosts and the staff of the show when they were starting. Remember the numerous criticisms thrown their way? I remember Gelli took most of the blunt with her raw style in hosting, which was not quite what the people expected to see from her. But then again, the best part of it all is that "Sis" has evolved since its inception two years ago. And so are its hosts. GMA executive Wilma Galvante has put it very nicely when she said that the strength of this show lies basically on the fact that it is headlined by real, genuine sisters who don't have to pretend to be anything to each other anymore. To paraphrase, Janice and Gelli only have to look at each other, talk and share everything they love to share between them, and end up oozing the love and friendship that is innate between them. Wilma also said that it continuously amazes her how open-minded these sisters are to make the show even more successful. "They listen to us with their hearts. They take in every single piece of advise we give them for the show and they cooperate. That, perhaps, is the reason why they have decided to make "Sis" a work in progress for it to evolve this way. These sisters are not here just for the money. They are really sincere in what they are trying to achieve for this show," Wilma added. "The show is loaded and we have commercial loads that make us really happy at the network," Wilma added. So, needless to say, "Sis" is probably looking at doubling the number of years that they have charted already. For their part, Janice and Gelli concurred. "We know who we both are and there are no pretensions anymore. We don't even try and outdo each other, if anything we manage to complement each other a lot. Wala na kaming getting to know each other stage. We talk a lot off camera and this kind of banter is what the cameras capture, thus we come out sincere," Gelli explained. Janice said that the easiest part of doing "Sis" is probably the time Gelli and her talk. "Because we're just being ourselves when we do this. It is not at all anything superficial. What we are off camera is basically what the people see on television." * * * Anyway, now that "Sis" is running towards its third year, program manager Bang Arespacochaga excitedly revealed their latest segment called "Sis Make-over to the Max." Patterned after that successful show in the US called "Extreme Makeover," the segment will meticulously pick candidates whose makeover process will surely enhance their living conditions. "The length of time for the makeover of every candidate varies upon the need of the person. If a candidate needed to lose weight, mas matagal. If she needs liposuction, we will go through that too. Dermatological requirements, etc. The works, a total makeover, to say the least," Wilma briefed us. Gelli said the idea is for the candidate to regain her self-esteem, or establish her self-esteem by starting with the way she looks. "Remember, if you look good, you feel good. And if you look good, you feel you can conquer anything," she said. Right now, Bang said they have already picked three candidates to be featured for this makeover segment. "One of them used to be really pretty but because she's not aging gracefully, she doesn't look much better now. She said she doesn't get accepted in jobs she applies for because her personality displeases them. We're doing this makeover for her so she will be able to regain her self-esteem and probably give her the chance to work again." Wilma added, "we're not trying to be something like 'Kapwa Ko, Mahal Ko' here but the aim is to really make a person feel good about herself by doing a make-over that starts with her physical appearance."- |
