What are we doing?
Okay, I will continue with my food/eating/diet rant. Today I read about a "treat" to give to kids to eat. Cut up an apple then slather each piece of apple in peanut butter then add some chocolate chips and again I ask what are we doing???
You took a fat free, low calorie apple full of vitamins and nutrients and covered it in junk. What ever happened to eating a plain wholesome apple? Apples alone are good and sweet they don't need that added garbage.
We have an epidemic of overweight, obese children and now lets give them a sugar laden high calorie "treat"? I am telling you we are going, no we have gone way overboard as far as sweets is concerned. I remember when cake had a simple coating of icing. I saw a recipe for a "rich cake" today. Chocolate cake mix, add a small bag of chocolate chips and a package of chocolate pudding. I bet that will be covered with chocolate icing. No, I didn't think it sounded good. I actually thought it sounded gross. I used to eat just cake with no frosting, no added sweets and a well made cake by itself tastes wonderful, especially still warm from the oven.
The reason for all the added sugar is simple. We have deadened our taste buds. What used to be good and sweet 20 years ago isn't sweet enough today. Now plain cake is not sweet enough, it needs more added to make it sweet enough. So we pour on more sugar and more and more but unless you stop and retain your sense of taste it will never be sweet enough. What happens when a cake with chocolate chips and pudding in it isn't sweet enough. How much more will be added? When will it stop?
Back in 1999 when I discovered Low carb eating I somehow managed to detox myself from sugar and I discovered a whole world of flavors and tastes and gentle natural sweetness of foods. Without my sense of taste being overwhelmed and numbed by sugar. I could taste food! But this country is addicted and its 100% legal. SUGAR. Just as herorin, cocaine and other addictive drugs are harmful to the body, sugar is just as harmful to the body and addictive.
I hear but sugar is "Natural". No, sugar is made from natural sources beets, sugar cane etc... but sugar has been processed and refined to be 300 times sweeter than it was in it's "natural form" lets not forget the bleaching of the standard white sugar in the bag. The sugar we buy in the store is not "natural". You can prove me wrong, go out in the wilderness and bring me 1 teaspoon of naturally growing granulated sugar or powdered sugar or brown sugar and I will pay you $5,000. Better yet bring back some sugar seeds and I'll plant them and grow my own granulated sugar or confectioners sugar or brown sugar garden. I wonder do they grow in their own bag or a box?
Listen, we have cut the fat, cut calories, made organic foods, made "healthy artificial" foods and we are getting fatter and fatter. The industry refuses to cut the sugar. I dare say if this country "USA" had cut out sugar as faithfully as we cut out the fat. We would be one of the healthiest, trimmest nations in the world.
It's sad what we are doing to our children we fill them up with sugar and they become overweight and inactive and these kids are losing their childhoods. The parents need to remember how they would ride bikes every day, play sports, run and walk everywhere and I ask how can you watch your overweight, always tired child sit there day after day in front of the TV or the playstation or computer while munching on a "healthy snack" apples covered in peanut butter and chocolate chips and drinking a coke with it.
The basketball sits in the garage still in the unopened box next to the bicycle again unused because your kid is always too "tired" to go out and play or your kid does go outside and tries outdoor activities and is so overweight, they loose their breath and can't keep up. We better wake up people we have a generation of children growing up without the experiances and memories that every child should have. That generation, the ones that do grow up, will be so unhealthy the load on our healthcare system will be a nightmare. All I can say is stop killing your kids. Its okay to say no to them. Saying no does not mean you do not love your kids. You can love your kids and say no.
