In "The Road Not Taken," Frost is emphasizing the themes of isolation and wisdom. Isolation is revealed because the traveler is by himself and is trying to explore both paths. He isolates both paths and weighs out the good and bad points of each. Through this strategy of considering both paths, the traveler is separating the paths and deciding upon which is better for him. The one that has been traveled upon seems to be the safer route, but Frost is different and tends to like the untravelled path better. It attracts him because it is isolated from society and shows less evidence of being walked on or disturbs. The theme of wisdom is revealed in the decision making process of which road to take. He considers both roads and points out the good and bad qualities of each. This process of thinking something through and not just picking with intuition demonstrates a knowledgeable and wise person.
The theme of death and entropy are apparent in "Home Burial." When Frost wrote this poem, his child had recently died. He was obviously depressed and writing seems to be the way to express himself. In the poem, he utilizes his wife as she looks outside the window. She is what reveals the depressive state through her "dull" face. He continuously asks her what she sees, but she does not pay attention to his question. This further demonstrates the theme of isolation as they have been isolated from their child. The theme of entropy is apparent as the memory and existence of the child is fading away. They only have a tombstone and memories that represent what once was a person.
Robert Frost demonstrates themes that deal with his life. He expresses his emotions towards certain situations and reveals his opinions. This is a way in which Frost copes with his situations and is able to vent his feelings. Themes revealed are that of death, isolation, entropy and wisdom. Frost connects these themes to his life, which in turn make the poems much stronger and vivid because they are actual occurrences.
