"Heart-Felt Expressions"

Copyright 2002, Janet N. Tryson

"Heart-felt Expressions" was made for the 2002 NYQuilts! show held in Troy, NY, in June. This year's theme was "Art From the Heart." It finished at 60" x 60". I used all batik cottons for the top, which had been collected over the past few years from swaps with friends and from quilt shops. The intent was to "illustrate" various expressions that contained the word "heart." I asked my online buddies for suggestions, then decided which of their suggestions I could easily convey in a picture block, literal or not.

The hearts and various motifs are machine-appliqued using a blind-stitch and "invisible" nylon thread. There is some hand-applique in a few areas (notably, the bleeding heart block). I also added a little hand-embroidery and beading to some blocks before quilting. After adding the borders, I machine quilted it, beginning with five trapunto areas between blocks ("April" design by Hari Walner). I then outlined the hearts and added feathered borders for them, and then quilted each block following the motifs in the batiks. More fancy "April" hearts were quilted between the blocks and at the edges, then the outer block border was quilted with a continuous swirl.

It has a narrow (1/2") navy border right outside the blocks, then a wider (1-1/2") lighter border, containing the "themes" of all the different blocks. The outer border was made using 4" squares of many of the included batiks, shaded from light in the upper left corner, to dark in the lower right.

Scroll your mouse across the picture; click on a block and it will take you to a page featuring that particular block. The "heart" expression associated with each block will be at the top of the linked page. If you click anywhere within the top border you will link to a close-up of the border and quilting.

If clicking on a block doesn't work with your browser, just click on a row/column reference to the right of the picture (e.g., R1C1 is the block in row 1, column 1).

Click here to see a closeup of the signature label on the back of the quilt. It gives a good view of the backing fabric as well (especially the flash-lit picture), which is not a batik, but a batik-like print. The label features includes two small felt hearts (of course!) and says the following:

This quilt is dedicated with love to my parents, Ed and Barbara Niemann, who raised me with a sense of humor and an appreciation for language and word play.
Special thanks go to my online "Magpie" friends Christie, Diana, Leslie, Sarah, Terri, and Verdi for their suggestions of "heart" expressions.

Here I am standing by my quilt at the show preview...you can't really see it hanging from the show number because it's hanging sideways, but the quilt earned a second-place ribbon (based on a point-system).
