My aunt sent me handkerchiefs made by her grandmother (my great-grandmother) and asked if I might be able to do something with them quilt-wise. I've tossed around some ideas; still have some more to think about; but this is what I've accomplished so far.
| The first, a lacy neutral-colored handkerchief, called out for a dark background to highlight the lace. I quilted a simple bordered square and loosely sewed the handkerchief to the background. Approx. 18" square. 2005 | ![]() |
| The next, a lace edged red handkerchief, was combined with my quilt group's challenge for this year which was to make a quilt with any 4 or more Log Cabin (or variation) blocks. I made my curved log cabin blocks in black and white with a touch of red; the flowers at the corners are actually ultrasuede pins that hold the handkerchief to the quilt and can be removed. Approx. 20" square. Oct. 2005 | |
| This picture shows the quilting of the log cabin blocks before attaching the handkerchief. (The lovely quilt on the bed was made by Pennsylvania Mennonites and was a gift from my parents.) | |
| In progress: Four similar handkerchiefs with lace corners will be featured in pockets on this quilt. The first picture shows the quilt pinned and ready for machine quilting. Approx. 26" square. | ![]() |
