History

The History of Indian Head Massage Indian Head Massage (or Champissage) is based on the ancient Ayurvedic healing system passed down from generation to generation within ancient India.

The treatment has been practised in India for over a thousand years and is a tradition in Indian families, with children as young as 6 being taught the strokes. Originally the treatment was used to keep hair in a beautiful condition by stimulating the blood flow of the scalp, which in turn nourished the roots.

Mr Narendra Mehta is known as the Guru of the British Indian Head Massage Movement. Narendra, totally blind from the age of one, grew up in India and head massage was an integral part of his life.

He came to England in the 1970's to train as a physical therapist and in 1978 returned to India to study the benefits and practise of Champissage, extending it to include  the face, neck, shoulders and upper back.

On his return to England, he developed a sequence of movements, now known as indian head massage
