Taylor Caroline county Crest: A naked arm couped at the shoulder embowed, holding an arrow ppr. Motto: Consequitur quodcunque petit. James Taylor, ancestor of the Caroline county family of that name, is said to have come from the vicinity of Carlisle, England. He was in Virginia before 1650 and took out patents of land on the Mattaponi River. By his first wife, Frances, he had Jane, born 27 Dec., 1668; James, born 1674; Sarah, born 1676. His first wife died in 1680, and in 1682 he married Mary, sister of John Gregory, by whom he had the following children: John and Anne, twins, born 1685, John died young; Mary, born 1688; Edmund, born 1690; John, born 1693, died young; Elizabeth, born 1694, died young; John, born 1696. James Taylor died about 1698 at an advanced age. JAMES TAYLOR, of Caroline Co., Va., b. 1615 (1635), near Carlisle, England; d. 1698, in Virginia; came to the Colony in 1635 and settled in Caroline Co. Carlisle, from whence he came, was but 20 miles from Penhington, the old ancestral home, and where his forefathers were buried. Several of the English Taylor's married with the Chi-chester and Culpepper families of England, who also came to Virginia about the same time. He m. "Yes, so the legend goes. I do not dispute anything you say about the James Taylor who died in 1698 except that his first wife was either Frances __?__ or Frances Walker. It could be Frances, but there is no proof other than James Taylor, Jr., named his first child "Frances".
Mary Gregory's mother is Elizabeth. I doubt her maiden name was "Bishop". I think she may have been previously married to a Mr. Bishop and she had a son, Robert Bishop, by her first husband. The legend says that the Robert Bishop who died in 1678, willing some real property to John Gregory, Jr., Mary Gregory's brother. I was send a copy of this and Robert Bishop did leave John Gregory Jr estate and John Jones JR got heifer and other things too. John Jones JR father was John Jones SR and his mother was a sister to Robert Bishop. For the Robert Bishop mention that John Jones is my brother-in-law.
Now for the mention of Robert have sister. What if this sister was name Mary Bishop. The mix-up of the two women cause the wife of James Taylor to be thought of as Mary Bishop Gregory. Then the name Bishop as middle passed on to his daugther Mary Taylor who married Henry Pendleton. I was told that middle names where not use until after the REV WAR

He states That Henry Pendleton wife Mary Taylor (1688-1700) was daughter of James Taylor (who died April 30,1698) of King and Queen Co by his second wife (whom he married Aug 10,1682)Mary Gregory (1665-1747) the daughter of John and Elizabeth (Bishop?) Gregory of Farnham adn Sittingbourne Parishes, Rappahannock Co., of which Parishes he was a Vestryman in 1665. On Feb 20,1663 he had grant of 600 acres in Rappahannock. Co. He was referred to as Captain on May 24,1676 d late in the year 1676

Notes for JAMES TAYLOR I: Was a large landowner and he was a prominent citizen in the colony. He was a lawyer and a public official and served as a member of the House of Burgesses. He was Sheriff of New Kent County in 1690 and vestryman of Saint George's Parish. He moved to Orange County, Virginia, and belonged to Saint Stephen's Parish in New Kent County and also in King and Queen County. He owned 13,925 acres along the Mattaponi River where he built his home and named it " Hare Forest ", named for the Earls of Pennington Castle in England where Taylor ancestors are buried. By division of county lines his home was in Orange County, Virginia where his children was born. This home is now located in Caroline County, Virginia.

States that a seal ring which had belonged to Jame Taylor I and which bore the crest and seal of Taylor arms has been handed down to the present generation. With his seal ring has also descended a legen to the effect that on a certain occasion when the King of England was enjoying a chase in one of his royal forests, a wild boar, Hard driven, turned upon the royal huntsmanm, whereupon ther sprang to his defense on of the knights who slew the boar. The King out of gratitude gave the Knight a crest, the destingusimg mark of which was an uplifted hand, accompanied by the motto:"CONSEQUITUR QUOD COMQUE PETIT".
Frances Bell Evans, a Gr Gdau of James Taylor has in her possession a Seal Ring, which bears the Taylor Arms, which he wore, and with the ring the legend has been handed down which is said to have added the fourth Boars' Head to the Arms.

Grandfather of two Presidents, Zachary Taylor and James Madison.In 1716 accompanied Governor Alexander Spotswood on an expedition over the Blue Ridge Mountains into the Shenandoah Valley. This was an attempt to promote Virginia's expansion. The men who accompanied Governor Spotswood were called Knight of the Golden Horseshoe.
It seams that WFT has James Taylor II home called "Monte Bello". He also had 2nd home"Meadowfarm: Built in 1722 on this grant, now reduced to about 1/3 of its orginal acreage, is magnificent structure. Like is predecessor, its from, Grecian columns on the back. its picturesque setting formal gardens and rolling lawns, are reminiscent of arstorcratic English estates. Desendants of the Col. James Taylor family continued to occupy this ancestral home as they have done continuously since 1722.

Helen Marie Taylor speaks of he ancestors with an uncanny intimacy."I'm a legend bearer"she says. My grandmother Sally Sears Taylor, instilled in me sense that history is both interesting and immediate. I can remember Sunday dinners where stories from 60 years ago considered hot off the press.
The origins of the estate date to the early 18th century, When Colonel James Taylor II built a small manor house known as Bloomsbury on 13,500 acres of what was the the edge of the wilderness. When Colonel Taylor's children reached matirity, he gave them parcels of adjoining land. The portion given to one of the his elder sons,Zachary(grandfather of the president) was Meadowfarm, where Helen Marie's family lives today. The elder Zachary buila a house on the land in 1727, but it was razed and replaced by the current white-painted brick Greek Revival house in mid 19th century.

James Taylor, of Carlisle, England, died in America, in the year 1698. His daughter Mary at the age of 13 married the oldest son of Philip Pendleton, who was 18 years old. Their sons were James, Philip, Nathaniel and Edmund. At the age of 20 years Edmund was licensed to practice law. In few years we find him in the General Court. Until his death , he was Judge and President of the Court of Appeals. His brother Nathaniel Pendleton, was the grandfather of Hon George W. Pendleton of Ohio

Meadows Farmer: Location: Three miles east of Orange County on the NE side of Route 61E?

This farm is a part of the originia grant to James Taylor JR. From GeorgeII, for which he paid forty-two pounds in English money in 1722. "Bloombury" was the first Taylor home, and "Meadow Farm" or at least the old part of the house was built in the latter part of the 18th Century/ The following persons have owned this property. James Taylor JR. 1722 and he gave it to Zachary Taylor 1727 and deeded two hundred and thirty-one acres to Zachary Taylor JR in 1765 and conveyed to his brother, Richard in 1768m, two hundred and two acres to Hancock Taylor, five hundred acres in 1768. It than passe to William Moore, brother of Erasnus Taylor's wife in 1768 or 1769. William Moore died in 1803 and his children inherited it and conveyed this tract of five hundred and seventy-eight acreas to Robert Taylor, who brought the balance of the property from Thomas R Moore making eight hundred and twenty-eight acres and it to Edmund Pendleton Taylor willed it to his widow for her life time and then it was to got his children. J.P. Taylor in 1852 bought the entire interest of all for $17,000. In 1869 he willed it to his nephew Erasmus Taylor, during his life time. "Meadow Farm" aqnd all cattle and implanments. The will directed as follows: "I give him the power to appoint which of his sons shall inherit the Mansion House or of leacing it to any son or dividing it as he seen fit" The property was left his nephew. Jacqueline Taylor, who bought out his father's interest and came into actual possession at this father death in 1907.

He was the 4th President of the United States (1809-17), known as the father of the Constitution because of his central role in the Constitutional Convention Madison was one of the founders of the Jeffersonian Republican party in the 1790s, and he served as Secretary of State (1801-09) under Thomas Jefferson.
Elected as President in 1809 with 122 electoral votes to 47 for the Federalist candidate Charles Pinckney, Madison approved the repeal of the embargo by which Jefferson had tried to avoid war through a ban on trade with the warring European powers. Tensions between the U.S. and Britain continued, however, and Madison's conduct of foreign policy was increasingly criticized both by the Federalists and by members of his own party. In 1812 Madison asked for a declaration of war against Great Britain.
Retirement: Retiring to his estate, Montpelier in Orange County, Virginia, Madison avoided further participation in party politics but did express his support for President Andrew Jackson when South Carolina revived the controversy over nullification of federal laws in 1832. He helped Jefferson found the University of Virginia and became its rector in 1826. He was also a member of the Virginia Constitutional Convention of 1829. Madison died at Montpelier on June 28,1836.

James Taylor and George Muse were with George Washington at Braddock's defeat. General Washington spent a week with Colonal Muse at his residence in Caroline, a neighbor to my father. James V said that his father James IV went with them. General Washiinton introduced him to Muse and he spetn a week at his house Studying military tactics.
James Taylor V was Noted Northern Kentucky Pioneer. Eighty-one years ago Gen James Taylor of Virginia, then Twenty-three years of age, landed on the Kentucky shore, immediately above the mouth of the Licking River.
As early as 1792. General Taylor visited this place and selected the site for his future home, which he then called "BELL-VUE".

ROWLAND2, JOHN1) was born April 03, 1744 in Orange County, Virginia, and died January 19, 1827 in Lexington, Fayette County, Kentucky. He married SARAH DABNEY STROTHER August 20, 1779 in Virginia, daughter of WILLIAM STROTHER and SARAH BAYLEY.Colonel Taylor with his brother Hancock made the first trading voyage down the Ohio and Mississippi Rivers from Pittsburgh, Pa. to New Orleans, Louisiana, 1769, returning home by sea. He served in the Revolutionary War. He entered the service as Captain, Virginia State Line; promoted February 4,1778, Major 9th Virginia Regiment, and December 7,1779, Lieut. Colonel.
Colonel Taylor's civil record was equal to his military record. He removed to Jefferson Co., Ky., near Louisville, in 1785. He was elected a member of the Ky. Convention, May 1785, and the Constitutional Convention of 1792; also of the 2nd Constitutional Convention, August 17,1799. He was a member of the Ky. Legislature, 1792 under the 1st Constitution, and was elected one of the judges of his county. He was a Presidential Elector for Ky., 1813, 1817, 1821, and 1825.
Richard, father of President Taylor (familiarly known as "Dick Taylor"), was born in eastern Virginia, March 22, 1744; a descendant of James Taylor, who came from England in 1682, and settled in southern Virginia. Richard's love of adventure carried him to the unexplored country west of the Alleghenies, before he reached his majority, and he crossed Kentucky to the Mississippi valley, thence to Natchez, a trading post, and from there northward through the trackless forest afoot and alone back to his father's home in Virginia. He commanded a Virginia regiment in the Revolution, and was a field officer on Washington's personal force. He was married Aug. 20, 1779, to Sarah Strother, then nineteen, and settled on a plantation near Orange Court House. They had three children, Zachary being less than one year old when they crossed the mountains into Kentucky and settled on the Beargrass Creek at the place known afterward as Springfield, six miles from the present site of Louisville, a point selected by the elder brother, Hancock (a surveyor of wild lands), who had preceded the family to the new territory.

PENN, John , signer, was born in Caroline county, Va., May 17, 1741; son of Moses and Catharine (Taylor) Penn. His early education was limited, owing to the neglect of his father, and when his father died in 1759 he began the study of law with his cousin Edmund Pendleton, and in 1762 was admitted to the bar. He was married in 1763 to Susan Lyme. In 1774 he removed to Granville county, N.C., and established himself in practice. He was a delegate to the Continental congress in 1775, succeeding Richard Caswell, who resigned to assume the governorship of North Carolina, and signed the Declaration of Independence in August, 1776. He was again a delegate to the Continental congress, 1777-80, and by request of the North Carolina legislature, took charge of the affairs of the state during its occupation by the British army. He was appointed receiver of taxes for North Carolina by Robert Morris in 1784, but resigned after one month's service, owing to the indifference of the people to support the cause of the colonies by their proportion of the tax levied. He died in Granville county, N.C., in September, 1788

ROWLAND2, JOHN1) was born November 24, 1784 in Montebello, Virginia, and died July 09, 1850 in White House, Washington D.C.. He married MARGARET MACKALL SMITH June 21, 1810 in Jefferson County, Kentucky.Margaret Mackall Smith, the daughter of a Maryland planter.The Taylors had five daughters and a son. Two of the girls died in infancy. The eldest daughter Sarah, married Jefferson Davis, an officer in Taylor's command, but died three months after her marriage.
(PRESIDENT) ZACHARY TAYLOR:
12th president of the United States (1849-50)He was a career army officer who was elected on the strength of the victories he won in the Mexican War (1846-1848. His father was Col. Richard Taylor, as a officer in the American Revolution he received 6,000 acres of land from the state of Kentucky. Shortly after Zachary was born, the Taylor family moved from Virginia to a plantation on the Muddy Fork of Beargrass Creek, near the present day city of Louisville. Richard Taylor soon became an influential citizen in Kentucky. Despite the wealth and position, Zachary had little formal education.
In 1840 Taylor was sent to Baton Rouge, Louisiana, to command the Southwest Department. This position enabled him to purchase plantation land in Mississippi. Taylor had been a planter and slaveholder since his marriage, but his Cypress Grove plantation, an 2,000 acre tract on the Mississippi River above Natchez, then became his main interest.
Taylor was a reluctant candidate. He had never voted in his life, and it was only after Whig politicians had created a popular groundswell of support for him that he demonstrated enthusiasm for the race. Taylor's opponents for the Whig presidential nomination included U.S. Senator Henry Clay of Kentucky and General Scott. Clay was the most respected Whig leader, but he was old and had previously been defeated three times for the presidency. Scott's candidacy, despite his efforts, never got off the ground. Nevertheless, Taylor faced two obstacles. Northern Whigs opposed him because of his Southern and slaveholding background. Professional politicians opposed him because he had made statements implying that he considered himself above the party. Nevertheless, Taylor's great popularity with the people overcame all obstacles and he was nominated on the fourth ballot at the Whig national convention. Millard Fillmore, comptroller of New York, was chosen as his running mate. As was the tradition at the time, Taylor did not campaign on his own, although he wrote many letters to friends and politicians.
On July 4,1850, Taylor stood in the hot sun at the foot of the Washington Monument in Washington, D.C., listening to patriotic speeches celebrating Independence Day. That night he had an attack of cholera morbus, or acute indigestion, and he died five days later. His last words were, "I regret nothing, but I am sorry to leave my friends." Vice President Fillmore took the oath of office as president and soon delivered a message to Congress indicating that he was willing to compromise on California.
Margaret Smith Taylor:wife of President Taylor, was born in Calvert county, Md., about 1790; daughter of Maj. Walter Smith, an officer of the U.S. army and an extensive planter in [p.107] Calvert county. Her ancestor came from England to Maryland in 1649, and held the appointment of attorney-general from Oliver Cromwell in 1655. Her grandmother Mackall lived on one of the family plantations named by her ancestor, "God's Graces."
Mrs. Jefferson Davis records an incident at a White House dinner in 1849, at which all the parties interested were present, when President Taylor, speaking to Senator Davis of his army life said: "You know my wife was as much of a soldier as I was." She had four children, Anne, Sarah Knox, Elizabeth and Richard. Anne married Dr. Robert C. Wood, surgeon-general, U.S.A., and had four children, John Taylor, Robert C., Anna Dudley, and Sarah Knox Wood. Sarah Knox Taylor married Jefferson Davis, at the time a lieutenant in the U.S.A. Elizabeth married Colonel Bliss, adjutant on the staff of General Taylor, and after his death she was married to Philip Dandridge of Virginia

1. SARAH KNOX TAYLOR, b. 1813, Vincennes, Indiana; d. September 15, 1835, Locust Grove, Louisiana; m. (PRESIDENT) JEFFERSON DAVIS, C.S.A., June 17, 1835, Louisville, Kentucky. Note: Jefferson Davis then went directly to Louisville, Ky., where he was married to Sarah Knox, daughter of Col. Zachary Taylor, to whom he had been engaged for two years but had failed to secure her father's permission to marry. The marriage took place at the home of the bride's aunt, a sister of Colonel Taylor, and in the presence of the colonel's two sisters, his brother and his son-in-law. The marriage was in no way an elopement, although not sanctioned by the father, and the estrangement between Colonel Taylor and Lieutenant Davis was not healed during the lifetime of Mrs. Davis, who only lived three months. They located on the Brier field tract, a part of the plantation of his brother, Joseph E. Davis, near Vicksburg, Miss., which he accepted in exchange for his interest in his father's slaves who had passed into the service of his older brother. The young couple contracted malarial fever and while on a visit to Locust Grove plantation near Bayou Sara, La., owned by his sister, Mrs. Luther Smith, Mrs. Davis died, Sept. 15, 1835. Mr. Davis spent the winter of 1835-36 in Havana, Cuba.
2 Harriet m'd Franklin Harper Elmore, senator, was born in Laurens, S.C., Jan. 16, 1799; son of Gen. John Archer and �� (Saxon) Elmore. His father was a native of Virginia, a member of the South Carolina legislature, and removed in 1819 to Alabama, where he died in 1834. His brother, Benjamin Franklin, was treasurer of South Carolina; and another brother, Rush, was a soldier in the Mexican war and a justice of the U.S. district court of Kansas, 1854-61.

Richard, soldier, was born in Baton Rouge, La., Jan. 27, 1826; son of Lieut.-Col. Zachary and Margaret (Smith) Taylor. He attended school at Fort Snelling, in Jefferson county, Ky., and in Edinburgh, Scotland, 1839-42, and in Paris, France, 1842-43. He matriculated at Yale in the junior class, 1843, and was graduated in 1845. He at once joined his father on the Rio Grande and continued with the army until after the battle of Resaca de la Palma, when, being attacked by fever, he returned to his home at Baton Rouge, and subsequently engaged in cotton planting on a plantation in Jefferson county, Miss. In 1849 he transferred his planting operations to St. Charles parish, La., where he conducted an extensive sugar plantation. He was married in 1851, to Myrth� Bringier de Lacadi�re. He died while completing this work in New York city, April 17, 1879.

Naturelly, the persistant use of the name YOUNG as foremane is the Lincoln County, Tennesse Taylors, had a rason. In tracing the famnily I(Worth) never lost sight of it as a clue. I found Where Edmund Taylor m'd Milllion Shelton in 1775 and where Jamee Taylor m'd Jincle Shelton in Crutchfield in 1804 and them locaated the will of Daniel Shelton in Pittsylvania Co., Va. in 1809. (If anyone wants to know about the Shelton email me) Edmund and his wife Million Shelton had a goodly sized family found in Pittsylvania and Henry Counities. From the records that have been presented it is easy to figure the relative generations of the TAYLOR family that settled in Pittsylvania county
Charity who married a certain John May in Henry County, Virginia, June 23,1779 was the dauther of Cap James Taylor, who was of an older generation
Mollie m Benjamin Hawkins Oct 1,1778 was of the same generation of Charity above but William evidently brother of Cap James, Mollie and Charity were first cousins.
Capt Edmund was brother of James and William and was the father of Edmund, who married Million Shelton daughter of Cap Daniel Shelton. on April 1,1778
Thus we have three brothers, Edmund, James and William, ancestors of the Pittsylvania Taylors.

Emigrated to from Carlisle, England to Virginia between 1650 and 1667. About 1688 he entered a tract of land as a homestead consisting of nearly 1000 acres situated on the Mattaponi river in that part of Drysdale Parish of New Kent County, later in the southerly part of Caroline Co., VA (Virgina Land Patent Book #7, p. 520, Oct. 30, 1686). He lived there until he died and was buried on his farm in Caroline Co., eight miles south of the present day town of Bowling Green. Virginia Land Patent Book #7, p. 625, Oct. 20, 1687: "To James Taylor of New Kent County: 744 acres in Rappahannock County, 480 acres part thereof formerly granted to Mr. Henry Abery and by him sold to Mr. Robert Bishop, and by the said Bishop's last will and testament given and bequeathed to John Gregory, and by him given to his sister, Mary, now wife of said James Taylor."

Crest: A naked arm couped at the shoulder embowed, holding an arrow ppr. Motto: Consecquitur quodcunque petit. James Taylor, ancestor of the Caroline county family of that name, is said to have come from the vicinity of Carlisle, England. He was in Virginia before 1650 and took out patents of land on the Mattaponi River. By his first wife, Frances, he had Jane, born 27 Dec., 1668; James, born 1674; Sarah, born 1676. His first wife died in 1680, and in 1682 he married Mary, sister of John Gregory, by whom he had the following children: John and Anne, twins, born 1685, John died young; Mary, born 1688; Edmund, born 1690; John, born 1693, died young; Elizabeth, born 1694, died young; John, born 1696. James Taylor died about 1698 at an advanced age. An old ring handed down in the family is said to have once been his property, and it bears engraved upon it the above crest which is that of the Taylors of Pennington Castle. The descendants of James Taylor have been exceedingly prominent in the history of the State, one of them - Zachary, becoming President.
