Sorrell Family

“HISTORICAL SOUTHERN FAMILIES” Volume I by John Boddie

A John, Robert and Richard Sorel registered at Oxford University between 1273-1300. They may have been students from France. A search of the English Calender of the State Papers should reveal how long the family resided in England before the time of first William Sorrell in the Visitations.

William Sorrell born: 1502 in High Easter, Essex, England died ? buried: Boulogne, France (as provided for in his will) wife unknown. Parents unknown.

William Sorrell of England in his will provided for his burial in Boulogne, France. The will gives no family data except that he leaves his land and affairs in the keeping of a brother, John Sorrell. It seems that a part of his estate was located in that part of Essex which is now London. The will is said to have been in French or Latin. A copy was not furnished and date not given. The Sorrells were traditionally Huguenots.

Westmoreland County, Virginia Wills, 1723-1726

In George Turberville’s will date 5th day of April 1726, mention John Crabb Son of Osman Crabb, late of this County Westmoreland and Mr. Thos Sorrell, both legatees of Daniel Occany, late of the sd County, deced., in relation & concerning the Annual Rent of a certain two hundred acres of land scituate in Cople Parish in the Forest, County of Westmoreland, which land was given and devised by the s. Daniel Ocanny in and by his last Will and Testament bearing date the 27th day of February in the year of Our Lord 1715.

Thomas Sorrell’s will, dated Oct 8,1725, and proved Feb 22,1726, as follows; “…to son James all the land I live on; all my lands at the head of Nominy where I formerly lived to my son John, and also to him the land devised to me by my father-in-law Daniel Occany; to my son James the land in James City County which my honored father, John Sorrell, devised to me and also 1/3 of my mill, 2/3 of my mill to my son John. To my nephew Thomas Sorrel the land where James Holloway now lives, on condition that my nephew quit claim title to the land adjoining my dwelling seat which he hath promised.

I have purchased the land James City County decvised to my brother John Sorrell, dec’d. to my loving consort all her wearing apparel, rings etc., Horse saddle and furniture, the use of three slaves and all my other estate during my children minority, she clothing and educating them. To son John two negroes and to son James, after his mothers death, those given to her. To my aforesaid nephew and his sisters, Elizabeth and Francis a mourning ring apiece and prayer book to each. (Motto on rings “Memento Mori”) bequests to daughters Ann and Winfried. Son James to be an assistance to his mother in teaching his little sisters, which I charge upon my blessings do.” The will appointed Loving consort, Elizabeth, Capt. George Turbeville and Wm. Sherman as executrix and executors.

The Court records dated Feb 25,1726, show that George Turbeville and William Sherman. The Survinving Executors, are to administer the will. This proves that Elizabeth died sometime between that date of the will and Feb 22,1725 and that date of a codicil mad to the will Feb 22,1726. This codicil did not mention his wife, “Elizabeth” but provided “that son James was to give John 5000 lbs tbco. And to each of his sisters 1000 libs tbco. When each of them shall attain their respective ages or Day of Marriage, and it he (James) refuses to comply then land and plantations revert to John”
