Martin Family

Before I started with my Martin family. I must state that I THINK that I have two Martin families. As far as I can tell they are not related.

This page will be for William and Jane (Virgenie) Martin.

The other Martin page is By the preponderant of the law. In other words I have proof this Martin family is mine but not with marriage records or wills or land deeds. But with facts that they must be who I say they are.

The two Martin families will go back and forth from one page to the other. For they traveled together and intermarried. I will try and keep them straight. But please do count on it.

I have taken Martin Family History, Census, Civil War Records, Bible and Facts by doing this I hope I have proven my Martin family

Thomas Richard Kidd and Cora Jane (Martin) Kidd

Thomas Richard Kidd and Cora Jane Martin were united in marriage in Wise County the 19th of June, 1898. They were joined in marriage by George S. Slover, pastor of Glen Rose Church. We are told that they were married in the W. S. Slover home near Paradise, Texas. Their marriage certificate was found in the files of the County Courthouse at Decatur, Texas in January, 1969 and it is now in the possession of their youngest daughter, and is much treasured. Both parents have passed away.

Cora Jane (Martin) Kidd was born in Wise County, November 12, 1878, the youngest of four children born of the marriage of the Rev. Francis Marion Martin and wife Frances Annie (Carrel) Martin. They were united in marriage in Hardin County, Tennessee, one half mile east of Milledgeville (at her parents' home) in the presence of parents and friends on November 9, 1869. They came to Texas in 1877 and settled near Aurora and Rhome. At this time, they were parents of three children: Nancy Wilson, William Campbell and John Elbert (all born in Hardin County, Tennessee). Cora Jane was born November 12, 1878 and the mother passed away on December 3, 1878, and was buried near their home in the Pleasant Grove Community.

Rev. Francis Marion Martin married a Second time (January 15, 1880) to Mary Elizabeth Paschall of Maury County, Tennessee and of this union six children were born. The first, a daughter, died the same day of her birth. The other Children were: Bertha Price, Joseph Putman, Sallie Ann, Martha Alice and James Wesley. The Rev. Francis Marion Martin are buried in the Cemetery at Poolville, Texas in Parker County.

"Wise County History"

Frances Marion Martin wrote a bio for "Wise County History" and it is in Vol. 1. In it he says he was the son of James Parkson Martin and Mary Wilson Martin. (Frank Martin believes Mary Wilson was a descendant of Jonathan Martin of Hardin county TN, which is where the "cousin" came from.) Anyway, here is a quote: "James P. Martin was a minister of the Gospel, beginning his preaching in very early years. His family consisted of four sons and two daughters. One son and one daughter died in infancy.

His father, William, and mother, Virginie, had seven sons and three daughters who lived to be grown. Three became ministers and one a doctor; five were Masons. Three served in the Civil War. The youngest died in camp. Rev. Jas. P. died in Wise County, Texas, Rev. M. L. and Dr. W. S. died in Oklahoma".

"A Biographical Sketch of the life of Francis Marion Martin" found in "History of Wise County"

Francis Marion Martin, the oldest child and son of Jas. Parkson and Mary Wilson Martin, was born in north Mississippi Tishomingo County, June 28, 1844, on the parents homestead on County Road. He was dedicated in infancy by his parents in the Methodist Church; which was on his parents home place, Bluff Springs. All of his school years were spent here, and he received only the required amount of education.

His parents suffered much during the Civil War, losing most of their property except the land. In July 1861, F. M. Martin took a voyage to Tennessee and remained there until March, 1863, when his parents left home and moved to Hardin County in Tennessee, which was his mother's native county. His father was born and reared in north Alabama, in Lawrence County.

Jas. P Martin was a minister of the Gospel, beginning his preaching in very early years. His family consisted of four son and two daughters. One son and one daughter died in infancy. His father, William and mother, Virginie, had seven sons and three daughters who lived to be grown. Three became ministers and on a doctor; five were Masons. Three served in the Civil War. The youngest died in camp. Rev. Jas. P. died in Wise County, Texas. Rev M. L., and Dr. W. S. died in Oklahoma.

Thence about the first of March, 1863, I, F. M. Martin, resumed position in the parents home again and remained there until my marriage. From quite a small boy I was convicted of my sins and thus striving against this from time to time, also feeling impressed with the call to preach the gospel, I continued until August 1868, when I was stricken down under affliction one dark gloomy night about the mid hour and at which time I made a complete surrender to the Lord by repentance toward God and faith in the Lord Jesus Christ. Oh, my soul was so happy that my parents rose up to rejoice with me. Oh, the very courts and the golden streets of Heaven were open to my vision, my father got his hymn book and began to sing praises for redeeming grace, and at once my life was turned to calling sinners to repentance. My brother-in-law, H. B. Baker, was present and was very wicked, so I approached with appealing words of warning about sin which brought him to weeping. Thus in a very short time he became religious and was useful in the church. My only surviving sister and he are living at a ripe age and yet faithful to God. I, because of affliction, was not permitted to attend church for one year or more. In April, 1869, we were faced by a sudden call of death to give up a dear mother. Oh, she's in Heaven waiting the coming of her loved ones. Oh, I know she was a true Christian. She sleeps near New Salem Church, the home of our membership, awaiting the glorious call of the resurrection morn. Yes, my mother will know her children that she led to the house of God early in life, and knelt so often in secret prayer. I am happy and proud that I was dedicated in infancy and raised at a family altar. Solomon said, "Raise a child up in the way he should go and when he is old he won't depart from it," and this invariably proves true. After I was converted I did not unite with the church and take up my cross as I should have. I became indifferent, drifting back in sin. Then on November 9, 1868 I married Miss Frances Annie Carrel, a good religious girl, which was a great stay and help in restoring the comfort and joy of my soul.

Thence the second Sabbath in August, 1873, I joined the Methodist Church south At New Salem, William H. Evans was the preacher in charge. I began Sabbath school and Church work at once. We have dedicated nine babies to God in baptism, four boys and five girls. We have on deceased infant baby girl, invisible to this world. Our children have been converted and joined the church. Two sons and two daughters, by my first wife, and two sons and three daughters by a second wife, all surviving.

On November 2, 1877, with loaded wagons, my father, brother and wife, sister and husband, one little brother, me and my wife and children, and a young man named C. M. Sherbet, started to Texas, arriving in Wise County, December 8, 1887. We stopped a few miles west of Aurora near Rough Edge school house, where Father an all placed our letters in the M. E. C. S., under Rev. J. H. Miller, in chare of the circuit. My father began preaching. I was elected clerk, class leader, and Sabbath School Superintendent. My wife, having been in feeble health for several years, gave way and on December 3, 1878, her Savior called her to her heavenly home, there to shout victory throughout the annals of eternity. Precious loved children, and friends, you all can meet her in heaven. She was left without a father, but had a dear, faithful mother to train her up. She professed religion in early youth and united With the Methodist Church, and was a faithful worker for the Lord, in public and private prayer. She was the only child and raised by a step-father who was very kind to her, William Jones; he loved her as his won.

In 1879 we built a school house three miles southwest of Rough Edge, known as Pleasant Grove on the Aurora and Springtown road. To this place we moved the church under Charge of the pastor, Rev. Joe G. Putman, who served four years. William Price served five years as Presiding Elder. I continued my work in the church and Sabbath school.

January 15, 1880, I married Miss Mary Elizabeth Paschall, a former acquaintance of my first wife;, both had been reared in Hardin County, Tennessee with in ten miles of each other.

I became more impressed that duty still called me higher and something I had neglected in the past. I said to my wife Mollie that we should take up family prayer, and she said, "Very well, if you think so," and we erected the family altar. From January 22, 1880 we have prayed twice daily, seldom letting anything interfere. Still being led in Divine calling, I applied to the church for Exorter's license, under the charge of Rev. Fishburn, which was unanimously granted. In October 1882, on Silver Creek at Slover school house it was granted, and the ensuing year, 1883, Bro. Price Elder and I took charge of the circuit together. I served under him five years.

Dr. W. S. Martin and family moved from Boonville, Mississippi to Wise County and about six of them united with the church there. He superseded me as superintendent in the Sabbath school work. I moved to Parker Co., near Springtown, but I still conducted my regular class and held prayer meetings. My father also was preaching some and attended my services with interest. In August 1883, by request of Brother Baldridge, Cumberland Presbyterian preacher, I was sent to assist at Tarripin Neck Church where I met with good success.

Thence in December of the same year I moved to Wise County southwest, on Salt Creek near Cottondale, in the bounds of the Paradise Circuit. Bro. I. M. Mills, was preacher in charge. He organized a class at Cottondale, I was elected Secretary and C. L. I leased a place known as the Uriah Survey, where many families forted up in Indian times. They had moved the school house off this pace where people guarded on mile east on Uncle Milten Perkins' place. I was elected trustee together with my cousin, J. W. Martin and S. W. Campbell in May, 1884, and I assessed the first assignments with 71 and 69 scholars. In third Sabbath in March, I organized Sunday School and prayer meeting and named the place Gravel Hill, the first in this community. Bro. I. M. Mills preached for us some and in August we had a protracted service for a week, with several conversions. My Sabbath school scholars and I introduced union literature, and we are still using it. I superintended S. C. nearly three years. Thence, others took my place and continued in good interest.

In 1886 I bought a place in the woods, built my house, moved on it. In February cleared my farm and my good wife and children did very much hard labor here, and we remained on it twenty-eight years. We had very much afflictions during the time. I was blind about nine years, but the good Lord restored my vision again. Oh. He has been very kind to us all through live.

My father departed this life Jan. 1, 1884. He sleeps at Pleasant Grove near where my dear companion and other kindred are awaiting the trumpet sound of the great resurrection morn, when we will meet the Lord in the air.

Still feeling under great response of calling, in council with Rev. W. P. Newsom, I agreed to go to the Methodist Protestant Church at West Brook quarterly conference in the bounds of Union Mission, Central Texas District No. 1, F. M. Martin, being examined on gifts and grace, was granted a license to preach the gospel of Christ. This license was to be renewed annually in the M. P. C.

This was September 21, 1889. John H. Ettes, Secretary, Rev. G. W. Jackson, P. C. was duly recommended to the committees of common annual session for itenary and orders. October 1889 at Weatherford, Texas C. T. C. M. P. C. Rev. W. G. Veal President. Rev. G. P. Miller, Sec. In the year 1890, the Rhome circuit being left without a preacher, I received notice for our President, G. W. Veal to take charge at once, which I did. This consisted of three appointments and Membership was somewhat scattered. I began in February. I visited Center Point three miles South of Paradise first.

Thence, Rough Edge near Boyd, and Gravel Hill my home school house. Rev. C. J. Van Meter of Rhome had previous charge of the fifth Sunday. In June, we took a new roll with fourteen former members with Brown Reed. Robert Ray, Stuard and Bro. John Runnels, C. L., elected at this place during first quarterly conference Bro. J. Mathes, Stuard and G. W. Culwell, C. L. at Rough Edge. Bros. McQuerter, steward, Jas. H. Martin C. L. (Note: Wonder if Jas. H. Martin was a typo and the H. should be P.) Later we appointed our first camp meeting for the fourth Sabbath in August with good interest. Bro. L. A. White, D. P. Newsom and C. J. Van Meter, also, our beloved President, G. W. Veal. The Lord crowned with victory in many conversions and additions to the circuit. Later Bro. Van Meter organized one more appointment to the circuit, Fairview, Near Rhome, which was attached to said work at insuing conference in 1891. Rev. D. P. Newsom was assigned to this charge and held the camp meeting at same date and place, Centerpoint. I and past mentioned brethren, assisted with good results. The work still Prospered.

Then at convening of annual session of conference, this work failed to get a pastor and very soon our President, C. P. Miller called a steward's meeting at Center Point and votes were cast. I was elected Pastor, the Lord being with us, we held our camp meeting at regular time and place and also closed the year's work with good success.

Most times daughters stay close to parents or family. Margaret A Martin and Moses L Martin living next door. This why I think Seth Martin and Francis Martin are Margaret A Martin parents Next to William Martin, the one who think is Moses father, James P Martin is living near him. So stands to reason that Margaret could near her family.

Notes for Moses Lydell Martin:

The M. L. Martin family came to Texas in December of 1874 by train. They rode it as far as Fort Worth and then by wagon on to Wise County. Their first winter in Texas was spent in a half dug out. He was first a Presbyterian minister and after studying the bible changed to the Methodist faith. He was a circuit rider for the Methodist Church and carried his Bible in his saddle bags.

I wonder if she had more??

Phil Watson answer to my question

Margaret Fashion Martin was born to Dr. Martin and Lucy on June 23, 1861 in Tishimingo Co, Miss. Unknown when she died. She married (Unknown when or where) William Westmoreland. He was born Apr 23, 1837

(unknown where) and died on Nov. 29 1909 and is buried in Childress, TX. Their son Fisher and wife Stella are buried in the same plot in Childress. Another son named Ernest married an unknown Dorothy. (Whereabouts unknown)

In 1880 Margaret would have been 19 years of age and probably living with her husband William Westmoreland, Sr.

The age gap between William Westmoreland, Sr. and Margaret Martin was 24 years. My belief is that the William Westmoreland listed as age 11 in 1880 was the 11 year old son of William Westmoreland, Sr. from an earlier marriage, and was living with Dr. Martin and Lucy.

I wonder if there were any more Westmoreland families listed in the 1880 Wise county census?

More About Edgar Allen Poe, Sr.: Burial: Restland Memorial Park, Dallas, Dallas County, Texas

Notes for Ruth Deloma Turcotte: Ruth Deloma Turcotte was born in Walnut, Illinois in a private hospital owned by a Dr. Hopkins and his son. When she was 4, her family moved back to Pekin, North Dakota . Ruth spent the years between 8 and 15 in Catholic boarding schools in Devil's Lake, North Dakota, Winnipeg, Canada and Forget, Canada. Her parents separated in 1912 - her mother returning to her family in Kansas and her father traveling with the railroad. She and her sisters, Doris and Lillie, and brother, Robert, had been left in the care of their Turcotte grandparents at Stump Lake in North Dakota. Attending school there was virtually impossible with the harsh winters. If you were able to brave the weather to attend school you would find yourself often sick from the exposure. She told us many stories of her harsh and austere life in these various boarding schools. The Sisters of Mercy's academy in Devil's Lake was the first school the three were enrolled in. There were tunnels underground there linking the dormitories with the school building and church. Her sister, Doris, was barely three when they arrived there and Ruth told of quickly becoming a mother to her so she would not cry all night long. She saw that she was dressed, her hair curled, and that she behaved properly so not to anger the Sisters. It was here that her brother, Robert, died of appendicitis. This was an extremely painful occurence for her because the Sisters refused to let her go see her brother in the infirmary. She eventually was able to sneak into the tunnels to the hospital only to find he had already died. She recalled one school in Canada where the nuns were extremely strict. Her father had come to visit her and her sister, Doris, there and they met with him in the parlour with the nuns in attendance. He asked how their life there was as it was a new school for them and they politely replied that everything was wonderful but they really wanted to go home with him. As a father, he suspected that something was wrong so after he departed he listened at the door and heard the nun's cruel words to his daughters. He promptly removed them from that school and found one more to their liking. Ruth made many life long friends during her stay in these schools and corresponded and visited with them throughout her life. Ruth moved to Denison, Texas to live with her mother and her new family in the second year of high school but found the lessons there too confusing as they were in English and she had spoken French at home and in school for her entire life. So, she went back to North Dakota and finished high school in Regina, Saskatchewan, Canada. She then returned to Dallas, Texas and went to Western Union School for several months. Her first job with Western Union was the night shift from 3 p.m. to 11 p.m. and she hated it. She was living with a Mrs. Long who helped her get a job with the Farm and Ranch Publishing Company.
