Research by Glanton Awbrey Briggs conclude that John, Thomas and Henry Awbrey of Brecknockshire, sons of Sir William Awbrey (d 1631) sailed for America and in all probability, from the Port of Bristol.

Sources: Will of Henry Awbrey,1694, Virginia\\\'s Who\\\'s Who, Boddie\\\'s Historical Southern Families John Awbrey, son of Sir William Awbrey of Tredomen and Abercynrig, Wales, arrived in Virginia with two of his brothers--Henry, later a member of the House of Burgesses and Sheriff of Essex County, and Thomas, John married Jane Johnstone in Westmoreland County, Virginia. They had two sons: John Awbrey, Jr. and Francis Awbrey. Francis was later Sheriff of Prince William County, and a large planter in Northern Virginia. Awbrey, Henry Burgess, 1682-92 Rappahannock

John Awbrey brother to Henry Awbrey was born in Aberynfrig, (Brecknockshire), South Wales, son of Sir William Awbrey of Abrecynfrig who died in Brecon 1631 husband of Elizabeth Johns/Jones of Ambermailaies. John marr. Jane Johnstone c 1677 in Westmoreland Co. She was b there in 1659 & d after 1699. Their children were Elizabeth (bc 1678), John (bc 1680- d 2/26/1724/5) & Sarah (b 1681, d 1702), all in Westmoreland Co., VA.

Elizabeth (bc 1678), Has never been proven as his daughter but John Awbrey did sister-in-law who married John Payne they were the parents of William and John Payne. When John Payne dead Elizazbeth married John Atwell.

Jane Johnstone parents were "James" Johnstone and Jane maiden name is unknown after her first husband died Jane married Cornelius Murphy, Their daughter Elizabeth married John Payne and John Atwell. After Cornelius Murphy died His widow Jane married Mr Martin

The will of Jane MARTIN, widow, dated 2 Feb. 1676, Copeley Parish, Westmoreland Co., VA. She says,"Unto my daughter Jane JOHNSTONE my plantation...If it should please God to take from this life my daughter Jane before she is marryed or comes of age or dieing without issue, the estate to fall into the possession of John AWBREY and James Gaynor. Unto my daughter Elizabeth PAIN to the value of fourty shillings...John AWBREY being a liver att my house shall there remain without opposition during the finishing of this crope (sic) or longer as he may find to his conveniencey and not to admitte of any person to dwell upon the plantation without consent from what estate I have willed unto my daughter Jane. (signed) Jane (hF) MARTIN." Proved 16 May 1677.

"John Payne Jr. was married before 1676, because at that date his mother-in-law, Jane Martin, left a will naming her daughter as "Elizabeth Pain." This woman Elizabeth is often called Elizabeth Awbrey, but that is incorrect. The confusion comes in because Elizabeth had a sister named Jane who married John Awbrey, a man old enough to be the girls' father. With a mother called Jane & daughter called Jane, a man much older than his wife, and the fact that John Awbrey was mentioned in mother Jane's will--all that taken together resulted in an incorrect assignment of John & Jane Awbrey as Elizabeth's parents.

However, mother Jane Martin's will makes it clear that her daughter Elizabeth is married to a "Pain" and that daughter Jane Johnstone is underage. (John Awbrey appears to be an overseer or something to that effect, and is mentioned in the will. His exact relationship to the family is unclear, but he is obviously not Elizabeth's father.) Assuming that married daughter Elizabeth is older than underage daughter Jane Johnstone, I have also *assumed* that Elizabeth was a Johnstone (rather than a Martin).

Some researcher say John was about 8 years old when his father died. I have no proof of this.

Ather the death of John Awbrey his widow Jane married William Chandler

September 28, 1692 his Will was proved and probate granted to his widow and relict Mrs. Jane Awbrey. This is borne out by and entry on page 74 of the Westmoreland County Book. Page 78a and November 7,1692- Mrs. Jane Awbrey returned an inventory and appraisal of the estate of Mr. John Awbrey deceased. John’s wife Jane remarried a William Chandler

Virginia Marriages to 1800

This database of Virginia marriages to 1800 contains over 85,000 names. Each entry includes groom, bride, marriage date, county, and state. Every name is indexed so you can search for one name, or two names that are linked. The marriage date is usually the date of marriage as given in the original entry. However, when no marriage date is given (e.g., the "marriage return" was not provided to the record keeper), the date of the license is used. In a few cases, a marriage will be listed twice, but in two different counties. This most often happened when a couple obtained a license in one county, but were actually married in another.

These marriage records, compiled by Liahona Research at the LDS Family History Library in Salt Lake City, UT, unfortunately do not contain citations for the origin of each entry. The purpose of this database is to provide a time and place for as many marriages as possible. It is up to the researcher to examine original records (see the Family History Library Catalog--available at any LDS family history center-- under the heading "Vital Records" for the appropriate locality) and gather whatever additional genealogical information is desired Dodd, Jordan.
