In the Studios eyes Cornell Wilde and Larry were alike enough that they were tested for the same roles. Larry tested 5 times, had costumes fitted and still lost out to Cornel for "A Song To Remember"(which Launched Cornel's career) also "Bandit of Sherwood Forest". Later Wilde (a College Fencing Champ) would coach Larry for "Gallant Blade" |

Barbara Hale (left) made two movies with Larry, "Jolson Sings Again" and "Emergency Wedding". Along with having at least 50 movies to her credit, this beautiful lady is of course most loved for her role as Della Street, Perry Mason's ever charming secretary for so many years. Her son William Katt was in many of the later shows as the P.I. His first starring role was in "Carrie", he later starred in the cult surfer movie "Big Wednesday". The lovely Evelyn Keyes, forever immortalized as Suellen O'Hara in "Gone With The Wind" starred as the first Mrs Jolson in "The Jolson Story", her dancing was a joy to watch and I wish there'd have been more of it.
She played in three movies with Larry, "Flight Lieutenant", tho' in this she starred opposite Glenn Ford and Larry's part was minor, then she starred opposite Larry in "Renegade" and "The Jolson Story"
Evelyn has written two Autobios, "Scarlett O'Hara's Younger Sister" and a sequel, "I'll Think About That Tomorrow". Great reading! Current TV Schedule |

William Demarest, the wonderful character actor above, was So good in the part of Jolson's Manager and friend Steve Martin. Whereas to many he will always be Uncle Charley in the long running TV series "My Three Sons", he will always be 'Steve' to me. He actually worked in the First Talking Picture "The Jazz Singer" with Al Jolson in 1927, then in 1964 he was in "Viva Las Vegas" with Elvis Presley.

Doug McClelland, Author of 11 Books including a Susan Hayward Bio, "The Making of The Wizard of Oz", "Blackface to Blacklist"( an in depth detailed description on the making of "Jolson Story" and "Sings Again", Betty Garrett was very helpful to him while writing this). He also wrote wonderful articles on Classic Movie Actors and Actresses, some Stars and some Supporting Characters in magazines like "Films of the Golden Age" (I love this Mag.),
I am indebted to him for selling me his Collection of memorabilia of The Jolson Movies some years ago and enjoyed writing to him. The Book is great as are all his books and worth having in your collection.
