Solid squares - cross stitches in 3 strands.

Lines - Backstitch in 1 strand

Dots - French knots, or beads or sequins.

Fabric

I used 14-count Aida and 2-3 strands of thread for the cross-stitches. Use 1 strand for the backstitch lines.

My sample piece was stitched in black and blue thread, but you can select any suitable colours that you have available in your workbox. The design takes nearly 1 full skein of the main colour.

Use your imagination. If you don't like French knots, then substitute seed beads or small sequins instead.
