Course Description:

The purpose of the course at this level is to reinforce and increase the knowledge of Spanish structures; at the same time, generate better skills in oral expression. The grammar exercises at this level will be related to everyday language and conversation. Students will engage in a productive language practice with a variety of concrete, transitional, and open-ended activities as well as dialogue that will lead them to answer the following questions: How will your language skills help you serve your community? How will you apply your Spanish skills into your service learning project? 

Skill Objectives and Outcomes:

Students will understand the importance of their Spanish skills in connection with their community. Students will become aware of the need of bilingual individuals in various organizations and careers. Upon completion, students will be able to comprehend and respond with increasing proficiency to spoken and written Spanish and demonstrate further cultural awareness.

Instructional Materials:

The text book, Realidades 2, begins with an introductory section followed by eight thematic chapters. The text will be supplemented by a workbook, class activities, projects and presentations.

Grades/Credit:

Students can earn points for tests, quizzes, daily work (done in class and at home), projects and participation.

  • 40% tests, quizzes, projects and presentations.
  • 40% daily points (punctuality, warm-ups, class work, participation, efforts to use Spanish in class). Disruptions will negatively impact the participation grade
  • 20% Organized binder, with proper sections labeled as explained below. Binder will be collected every two weeks; students must demonstrate organizational skills. *

 

Students will receive regular feedback and an opportunity to correct and improve a minimum of once a month.

 

Suggestions for Additional Work:

Students are encouraged to get language experience outside the classroom, this can be accomplished by:

  • Documenting real use of their new language outside of the class

-order in restaurants

-become friends with a Spanish speaker and practice

  • Bringing in news articles either with vocabulary learned or current event stories about Spanish-speaking countries
  • Watching Spanish language TV.
  • Listening to Spanish radio or music in Spanish
  • Visiting a museum exhibit that focuses on Spanish-speaking cultures

 

Late Policy: 

Homework: Work missed due to excused absences needs to be made up as soon as is reasonably possible by making an appointment with me . Late (unexcused) homework receives ½ credit.

Major Assignments will be downgraded 10% for each day of lateness and will not be accepted after three days without an excused absence.  Extensions for excused absences must be arranged with the teacher immediately upon return.

* IMPORTANT: SPANISH BINDER. ALL STUDENTS MUST HAVE A SMALL 3-RING BINDER DIVIDED IN 5 SECTIONS.

 1. TAREA: Homework and class work

2. ESTAMOS LISTOS: Warm-up activities

3. REFERENCIA: Notes, vocabulary, lists, maps, etc.

4. EXAMENES: Quizzes and tests

5. PAPEL: Blank lined paper for daily use

 

Binder will be collected twice a month.
