Course Description: This course will address the needs of those students who are new to the language. The grammar exercises and directed conversations are designed to allow the student to progress rapidly and master the most basic Spanish expressions and constructions. Students will engage in a productive language practice with a variety of concrete, transitional, and open-ended activities that will lead them to answer the question: Why study Spanish?
Skill Objectives and Outcomes: Students will understand the importance of a foreign language in their curriculum and how studying Spanish can improve their first-language skills. Students will be aware of how studying Spanish can expand their career opportunities. Above all, students will understand culture; the Spanish-speaking world is rich in music, food, art, literature, history and everyday traditions. Students will appreciate how learning about other cultures helps to understand other people’s perspectives, patterns of behavior, and contributions to the world at large.
