| Lesson Plan #1 World History 3201 Unit on the Holocaust Brief Description Students will read biographies of children who survived the Holocaust. They will read poems and stories I will provide for them from the book ...I Never Saw Another Butterfly... In particular they will read the diary of Anne Frank. Anne Frank was a young Jewish girl who has become an icon after the discovery of a diary. She kept her dairy detailing the time that her and her family spent in hiding before being sent to a Nazi concentration camp where she was killed. Students will read excerpts from this book as well as other stories. Objectives: - Students will learn first hand about Jewish children in the holocaust. - Student will gain understanding of the events that occurred through reading biographies and other sources of literature. - Students will come to and understanding of their feelings of the holocaust and reflect their feelings by writing their own stories on how letters and information has affected them. - Students will gain an appreciation for freedom and the liberties that they have. - Help students gain a social consciousness and brainstorm to help come up with plans to help prevent such tragedys occurring again. Activities The first part of this plan is for the students to read a letter from the book I Never Saw Another Butterfly From then students will be asked to explore the poem and they will be given a hypothetical situation. The situation would be that Pavel Friedman, the author of the poem wants the class to write back to him. They would have to write on something or some part of his writing that they found particularly interesting, or the students could write on how and why the letter affected them. In doing this students would include specific details about this period or the poem. Students will also have to include a section on how they believe their own life has been affected by the events of the Holocaust and its aftermath. Timeline one class read letter and write response The second part of this project is for the students to examine the diary of Anne Frank. Students will be given excerpts from the book and will be asked to go to the internet to review online resources. From this students will learn new information about the life of Anne Frank and the online resources will allow students to read and think critically about the book and the Holocaust in general. From the information gathered here the students will have a unit test which will test this topic as well as the other information learned in the unit. (information of the WWII and other information learned on the Holocaust).
