Living in Port Washington

This page isn't really about my travels since this is our home now. We moved in on September 20 2000, or at least Steve and Verity did. I flew out a couple of days later and Fliss came too, so she could see where "home" is. Port Washington lies on the North Shore of Long Island, New York, about 18 miles from Manhattan. We live about 100 yards from the water, facing Manhasset Bay.

I have been here for a little less than a year and it is probably the prettiest place I have ever lived in. Every morning I wake up and check out the harbour from my bedroom window. Mostly, the water is blue and calm and the weather is set fair for another day. Occasionally it is white and the day will be overcast and dull. Once in a while the bay is brown. Then we shut all the windows and wait for the storm to end.

Left is a photo taken from our window during a violent nor'easter on March 29th 2001. It seems that this winter was unusually harsh and we had snowstorms from before New Year until April. When it wasn't snowing it was icy cold but then the sky was a brilliant blue. We have a great view of the harbor in winter, but of course the boats are wrapped then. In the summer the trees obscure all but a small patch of water and we catch glimpses of craft sailing by. Whatever the season there is always something to look at, a white heron, maybe an osprey or the ubiquitous Canada geese.

As you can see eventually summer came to Port Washington and with it the annual Harborfest celebration. The photo shows Steve and I waiting to board the sailing boat behind us for a trip round Manhasset Bay and into Long Island Sound. Normally you have great views of both Manhattan and Connecticut from the Sound but the haze was too strong and we couldn't see much. I still managed to get sunburnt, though.
