1) The Orphan
Jane Eyre (Marla Schaffel) recalls a miserable childhood spent under the unsympathetic hand of her aunt, Mrs. Reed (Gina Ferrall).  In the attic of Gateshead Hall, she sees young Jane (Bonnie Gleicher) longing for something more: the freedom to be herself.

Mr. Brocklehurst introduces Jane to the stark realities of Lowood
2) Children of God
Frustrated with the orphan girl and longing to be rid of her, Aunt Reed sends Jane to Lowood School, a charitable institution under the direction of the heartless Mr. Brocklehurst (Don Richard).  The schoolgirls are treated terribly, underfed and harshly dealt with by strict teachers.

3) Forgiveness
The only light in young Jane's life is her newfound friend, Helen Burns (Jayne Paterson).  Together, they spend may happy hours reading and talking.  When Jane tells Helen about the resentment she feels towards her aunt, Helen explains that forgiveness is better than hate and revenge.  These are words Jane will carry with her for years to come.

4) The Graveyard
A typhus epidemic hits Lowood, taking with it many victims, including Helen.  For her next eaight years at the school, Jane faithfully visits the grave of her friend.
5) Sweet Liberty
Time has passed.  Now a teacher at Lowood, Jane meditates on the restrictions she feels are holding her back.  The old restlessness stirs again; although she is content, Jane still longs for liberty.

6) Secrets of the House
Jane places an advertisement in the paper, and receives a reply offering her a position as governess to a young French girl at Thornfield Hall.  Once there, she realizes she has stumbled on the mysterious past of the Hall's master, Mr. Rochester.
7) Perfectly Nice
Upon her arrival, Jane is greeted by the housekeeper, Mrs. Fairfax, who is delighted to finally have a companion to talk with (or rather, to!).  She is happy in her new life, and grows to love both the old housekeeper and her young pupil, Adele.  However, she has yet to meet the master of the house, who is away.
